1. Introduction: Alliance of the SouthEast (ASE), a non-profit dedicated to organizing the community on a range of issues to improve the lives of residents in Southeast neighborhoods of Chicago, is seeking proposals from qualified individuals for a grant writing consultant position. The selected candidate will be responsible for researching, writing, and coordinating the grant application process to secure funding for our initiatives.
2. Organization Background: ASE is a multicultural, interfaith coalition of churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations, all working together to address the challenges facing the neighborhoods of Southeast Chicago. Formerly the Alianza Leadership Institute, we have grown from our beginnings as a series of leadership skills workshops to a powerful network with over 40 community partners representing thousands of people. ASE develops grassroots leaders who work for positive community change, on a broad array of topics, including equitable development, environmental justice, youth leadership, tenant organizing, and neighborhood safety. We envision a powerful grassroots base that impacts decision makers and wins real improvements in our neighborhoods.
ASE accomplishments:
- Environmental justice wins:
- Won a victory with the City's denial of the General Iron permit (company with a history of air pollution violations). Now negotiating and working on policies at city, state, and federal levels, led by community residents.
- IL Attorney General filed an amicus brief in support of our organization’s lawsuit to stop a 25-foot high expansion of a toxic landfill next to a local park.
- IL Governor signed agreement w/ US EPA to consider impacts of toxic developments in overburdened communities & prior air pollution violations for additional controls or monitoring
- Youth leaders’ recommendations for alternatives to police in schools were adopted by CPS & implemented at all Chicago Public Schools. Youth also won a $3.2 million reinvestment in restorative justice & mental health resources in schools.
- Tenant leaders met with US Dept. of Housing & Urban Development officials, Ald. Chico, & Chicago Dept. of Buildings on needed repairs & addressing safety issues. Previously, tenants won $1.6 million released to fund capital improvements, 1000+ repairs completed, & 45% reduction in three asthma triggers.
- Won new policy on federal funds to: prioritize local hires, remove barriers to hiring, & expand supports for Diverse Owned Businesses.
3. Scope of Work: We are a medium-sized organization, and recently expanded our staff capacity. We are looking for someone to help increase and diversify our funding. The grant writing consultant will be responsible for:
- Researching and identifying potential funding opportunities from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and other philanthropic sources.
- Writing and submitting grant proposals tailored to the specific requirements of each funder, on aforementioned topics.
- Collaborating with ASE staff, partners, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information and updates on ASE’s campaigns, and data for proposals.
- Working with the ASE Executive Director and staff to develop budgets, financial reports, and gather supporting documentation for grant applications.
- Maintaining a calendar of grant deadlines and ensuring timely submission.
- Building and maintaining relationships with funders and stakeholders.
- Assisting with grant reporting and compliance requirements.
- Providing regular updates to the executive team on grant activities and outcomes.
- Assist with fundraising event/s, e.g., reaching out to potential sponsors.
4. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:
- 2+ years experience writing and securing grants, esp. for non-profit organizations. Experience working with or writing for community or union organizing entities a plus.
- Strong understanding of non-profit funding sources and grant application processes. Strongly preferred: knowledge of various funding sources available for Chicago non-profits.
- Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.
- Experience with program evaluation and performance measurement.
- Some knowledge of financial management and budgeting for non-profit organizations.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Commitment to the mission and values of ASE, including a shared commitment to social, racial, and economic justice.
5. Proposal Requirements: Proposals should include the following:
- Cover letter outlining your interest and qualifications for the position.
- Resume, highlighting relevant experience and accomplishments in the non-profit sector.
- Example(s) of successful grant proposals you have written, especially for non-profit organizations.
- A list of 3 references who can speak to your grant writing skills and non-profit experience.
- Proposed fee structure or hourly rate, keeping in mind a budget of no greater than $20,000 and an estimated 10-20 hours per week.
- Description of your availability and expected turnaround times for grant proposals.

6. Evaluation Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated based on:
- Relevant experience and track record of grant writing success, with particular emphasis placed on grants written for organizations with similar missions and initiatives.
- Quality of writing sample(s).
- References and recommendations.
- Proposed fee structure and value for money.
- Availability and responsiveness.
