Veterinary Assistant will assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in medical and surgical care of the animals. Assist with basic care and treatment, administer medication, and vaccines. Sanitize surgical instruments/equipment, assist with surgical procedures and post-operative care. Draw blood samples, perform basic laboratory tests, and provide quality medical care and support. May assist with euthanasia and use cremation unit. Work under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist veterinary medical staff with all surgeries including anesthesia administration, recording controlled substances, intubation of animals, surgical site preparation, and observation under anesthesia and recovery.
2. Assist in high volume shelter spay/neuter surgeries (including pediatric); support veterinary medical staff with procedures including anesthesia and post-operative care of the patient.
3. Assist veterinary medical staff with daily rounds; performing blood draws, testing, and setting up medication and treatments.
4. Responsible for the daily observation of health and welfare of animals in the clinic and throughout the shelter. Follow up on the health observations reported by staff and volunteers, advises the Veterinarian regarding animals that need further medical care.
5. Reports injuries and/or irregular behavior of animals to Veterinarian, Director and/or Animal Care Manager.
6. Administers vaccines, microchipping and performs initial screening examinations on new arrivals.
7. Responsible for cleaning all surgical instruments daily, wrap packs, run autoclave as needed, clean, sanitize and disinfect all exam room and surgical room areas and equipment, restock medical supplies for the week.
8. Assists with or performs euthanasia of animals; ensures safe and humane handling of animals and drugs during procedure.
9. Enters and maintains animal health, treatment and medication records, surgeries performed and other general medical information on all animals.
10. Maintain inventory of medications, vaccines, and medical supplies to ensure availability and timely ordering.
11. Assist in the identification of possible disease outbreaks and works with the veterinarian and other staff to take appropriate preventive action.
12. Promotes humane awareness towards the care and treatment of animals through training, education, and outreach programs.
13. Performs duties of lower-level classifications, as needed in emergent situations, to provide adequate coverage and customer service; works as a team with department staff to ensure cross functionality and back up support as needed.
14. Assist with medical functions for emergency disaster operations.
15. Performs other job related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree plus one (1) year experience working with animals in a clinic, shelter or a professional animal establishment; OR any related combination of education from an accredited college or university or related experience totaling three (3) years working with animals in a clinic, shelter or a professional animal establishment. Related education and experience may substitute for the required education and experience may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. Must obtain a Euthanasia License (EUT) through the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine and maintain during employment.
