POSITION TITLE: Alcohol Substance Abuse Counselor

REPORTS TO: As Assigned per Org. Chart

DEPARTMENT: Student Services

CATEGORY: Certified

CONTRACT TERM: Ten Months (10)

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: The position as Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ASA) Counselor will be responsible for providing professional educational and treatment services to Junior High school students. This position will develop individual treatment plans for youth referred for drug and/or alcohol counseling services. The ASA Counselor is also a liaison for the school with the Hopi Behavioral Health and Teen Clinic. Hopi Junior/Senior High School is committed to helping all students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning and career and vocational development.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Assesses referred students' needs, evaluates students' drug/alcohol treatment needs and develops treatment plans based on the assessed needs of referred students.
  2. Assesses the drug/alcohol awareness needs of the student population on the Hopi Reservation and plans educational experiences to meet needs, as assessed.
  3. Coordinates with each student's academic program to obtain present achievement status, assesses strengths and needs, and makes recommendations for treatment services.
  4. Works with appropriate staff, teachers, and others to implement treatment interventions recommended.
  5. Provides individual and/or group counseling services to students of Hopi Junior/Senior High School.
  6. Provides professional advisement regarding policy and procedure through the School Superintendent/Principal on matters regarding developing a high quality guidance and counseling program for Junior High students.
  7. Operates a government owned/leased motor vehicle, as needed.
  8. Coordinates with appropriate staff regarding each student's progress and continuing treatment needs; Serves as a member of the multi-disciplinary staffing team, as required.
  9. Provides in-service training to academic staff on substance abuse awareness and treatment.
  10. Maintains required documentation and completes status reports, as directed by supervisor.
  11. Coordinates treatment services with outside agencies and resources (as needed), including initial referrals and follow-up activities. Advocates on behalf of students in their efforts to access supplementary services to meet their treatment needs from school, local, and other resources (i.e. medical, psychological, and/or economic) and makes resources available.
  12. Acts a liaison between the school and juvenile court officers if necessary.
  13. Remains current in the field of counseling and alcohol and substance abuse prevention through attendance at professional workshops and in-service activities.
  14. Conducts duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Hopi Junior/Senior High School Governing Board Policies and Procedures.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  1. Knowledge of National Competencies through American School Counselor Association.
  2. Knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse prevention best practices for adolescents.
  3. Knowledge of Hopi history and culture.
  4. Knowledge of district rules of conduct and ethics.
  5. Knowledge of relevant Governing Board Policies.
  6. Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  7. Professional verbal and written communication skills; ability to instruct and maintain emotional control under stress.
  8. Knowledge of general school site rules and policy.
  9. Knowledge of Governing Board rules of conduct and policy.
  10. Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
  11. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum of a Master's Degree in Counseling, with appropriate Counseling Certification endorsement to function as a Junior High School Counselor required.
  2. Demonstrated competency in conducting individual and group counseling, program development,
  3. guidance program administration, academic assessment, psychological assessment, conduct of guidance classes, knowledge of local and other supportive resources for students, research, and other applicable skills and abilities required.
  4. Minimum of (1) year's previous counseling experience in a chemical dependency treatment program, preferably serving adolescents.
PREFERRED QUAILIFICATIONS:
  1. Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.
  2. Valid State Driver Licenses.
  3. Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  4. Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years which include state, federal and local tribe.
