DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC), Houston, Texas seeks and energetic and skilled hematologist/oncologist at the Multidisciplinary Cancer Center. Candidates with clinical interest in hematology and oncology are welcome to apply; those interested in malignant and benign hematology are particularly encouraged. Michael E. DeBakey VAMC is a teaching facility affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine Department of Medicine and Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center. The physician must be board certified in Internal Medicine and board-eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology to work at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030. Physician must hold current unrestricted/unencumbered licenses to practice in any state of these United States. At the MEDVAMC, we provide a comprehensive range of techniques for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. We have a strong multidisciplinary team with expertise that includes gastrointestinal surgical oncology, ENT, urology, and thoracic surgery. Our radiation oncology department treats all cancer types and is a leader in stereotactic body radiation therapy within the VA system. We also have highly skilled interventional radiologists and interventional pulmonologists. The MEDVAMC has multiple tumor boards for multidisciplinary cancer care. The number of new cancer patients seen every year at MEDVAMC continues to increase, and we serve a large catchment area that includes rural areas. Many patients are referred to our facility from other cities for a higher level of care. Ability to perform clinical assessment including history and physical, appropriate diagnostic evaluation, and timely implementation of treatment Diagnosis and management of hematologic and oncologic emergencies Rounding with residents and fellows on the inpatient service as assigned in rotation with other physician team members Covering weekends and holidays in rotation with other physician team members Physicians must be competent to perform the following procedures: Diagnosis and management of malignant hematology, benign hematology, and solid tumor oncologic diseases Identification and management of side effects of cancer treatments and hematologic conditions Counsel and advise patients with new diagnosis of malignancy or benign hematologic condition Teach clinical fellows and residents in the outpatient clinic setting Perform bone marrow biopsies as needed and peripheral smear analysis Order diagnostic studies and interpret laboratory tests, EKG, and radiology diagnostic tests (e.g. chest xray, CT scan, MRI, PET scan). Perform outpatient initial and follow up continuity of care for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions. Prescribe chemotherapy and other medications within defined scope of practice. Counsel patients on cancer screening, genetic testing, and cancer prevention Responds to consultation requests in a timely manner Responsible for typing the appropriate documentation for all patient interactions in the VA electronic medical record. He/she must be computer literate. Provides education and counseling for patients and families for their hematologic or oncologic. Overseeing advance practice practitioners (nurse practitioner, physician assistant), and teaching students, residents and fellows rotating on inpatient and outpatient services Maintain communication with referring providers and other specialties (surgery, radiation oncology, transplant, etc) for patients who require multidisciplinary care Participate in multi-disciplinary tumor boards Ability to complete electronic consultations (e-consults) for hematologic and oncologic conditions All other duties dictated by patient care. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00AM- 4:30 PM Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Required: The physician must be board certified in Internal Medicine and board-eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology Preferred Experience: Hematology/Oncology experience Focus on Hematology clinical care (Benign and Malignant) and clinical research. Successful completion of an ACGME or AOA accredited residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology with board eligibility/certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Hematology/Oncology. Current BLS certification Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary but may involve periods of standing, walking, lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying up to 15 lbs. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
