The Materials Analysis Engineer is primarily responsible for performing in-depth failure and root cause analysis on Uponor all product returns using established and ad-hoc analysis techniques and tools. In addition, this role will manage and support technically complex cases for both Commercial and Residential applications. Works closely with Product Quality Group (PQG) Lab technicians, Case Managers, various PQG Engineers, and the Warranty Team to lead numerous cases/projects simultaneously while maintaining established customer experience (Cx) Service Level Agreements. Acting as a technical liaison for new or complex failure analysis cases and field issues including but not limited to onsite inspections, joint examinations, and quality investigations/alerts. This individual will also help review and oversee lab result outputs from technicians for all Tier 1, 2 & 3 level product returns. The Materials Analysis Engineer will provide high quality support with a multidisciplinary team with analytical and performance testing using failure analysis techniques and tools to determine failure mechanisms, probable contributing root causes and point of occurrence of issues, while providing effective communication and reporting output of results as part of the analysis solution. This individual will also help guide and coach technicians in good engineering and failure analysis principles. This role will support the data reporting and documentation requirements of the PQG team and Uponor by maintaining accurate failure and root cause analysis results, data, and records in accordance with established procedures.

This role is considered an on-site position. The ideal candidate will be located in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area with onsite work at our North American manufacturing headquarters in Apple Valley, MN.

What will you do?

• Perform and lead the technical resolution of failure and root cause analysis of all product issues of Uponor products stemming from customer returns, by using established and newly developed failure analysis techniques and tools to determine failure mechanism, probable contributing root cause(s), and primary point of occurrence.
• Review and oversee lab result outputs from lab technicians for all Tier 1, 2 & 3 level product returns.
• Manage and participate in complex failure analysis cases and field issues involving onsite field inspections, joint examinations, and Quality Investigations/Alerts.
• Coordinate analytical resources and manage external consultants for outsourced testing and/or evaluation to ensure rapid and accurate results for failure and root cause analysis of issues.
• Develop detailed written reports, inspection briefings and management presentations on various cases.
• Collaborates regularly with R&D, Supplier Development Engineering, Quality Assurance, and other cross-functional departments when required to effectively communicate product performance learnings to aid in relevant improvements or corrective actions involving product, process or service offered by Uponor.
• Develops, implements, and maintains failure analysis methods and systems for evaluation of Uponor product returns.

What will you need?

Required Education, Skills and Competencies:

• This position requires a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or other relevant technical degree.
• A minimum of 3-5+ years of relevant work experience.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills with strong, demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to manage complex, multi-faceted problems using various problem-solving techniques. Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Direct experience dealing with difficult or emotional customer situations.
• Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with clients and employees effectively, persuasively, and tactfully at all levels of the organization, with ability to make rational decisions, effectively translate ideas, concepts and information while exercising good judgement regarding analysis methods and communication of results.
• Strong project management competency with attention to detail with a high quality of work in a dynamic environment. Utilizes a proactive and persistent approach and demonstrates a sense of urgency in accordance with the issue. Must be able to efficiently manage time when under pressure to meet deadlines while balancing the needs of multiple projects and customers at one time.
• Established proficiency at both technical and business writing; effective report writing is critical.
• Understands business implications of decisions; Supports and explains reasoning for decisions; Includes appropriate people in decision-making process.
• Strong and demonstrated computer skills and experience with MS Office software (including Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, Power Point). Proficient in (or able to learn new technologies) Salesforce, Microsoft Teams and other digital collaboration and reporting tools.
• Deep knowledge and demonstrated hands on laboratory experience using both analytical and mechanical test equipment including but not limited too:
o Stereo Microscopy (fractography interpretation)
o Scanning electron microscope (SEM)/ energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS)
o Universal Testing Machine (UTM) (Tensile Testing)
o FTIR microscopy, GC-Mass Spectroscopy, DSC, TGA, molecular weight and others.
• This position requires an individual with the flexibility to travel to external labs and jobsites within the US and Canadian locations (up to ~ 5-15% travel).

Preferred:
• Experience with the following materials & methods: Engineering Polymers, Brass, pipe extrusion, Injection molded parts and processes particularly a plus.
• Demonstrated success in applying statistical methods and tools such as DOE, reliability concepts and others.
• Demonstrated knowledge of construction and mechanical engineering concepts regarding plumbing and heating systems. Both Commercial and single-family home construction.
• Experience evaluating mechanical failures in a commercial or industrial setting preferred.
• Experience with laboratory and on-site investigation/evaluation.
• Working knowledge and experience with quality systems regulations and guidelines such as ISO
