The Product Technician (PT) is responsible for coordinating VAVE activities across the AFS group as well as assisting with testing product to industry standard for performance requirements as needed. The PT is responsible for problem solving, product maintenance and continuous improvement activities.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile data and produce reports relevant to assigned area.
  • Maintain an effective working knowledge of AFS products.
  • Comply with safety, quality, and productivity requirements and procedures.
  • Must be able to effectively manage time and prioritize work to meet timelines.
  • Responsible for completing tasks driven by department projects and initiatives.
  • Be able to operate various precision measurement devices (calipers, micrometers, height stands, steel rulers, indicators, mil thickness gages, etc.) to perform inspection, performance evaluation, root cause analysis, and reverse engineering.
  • Understand measurement concepts and systems to provide support.
  • Analyze equipment specifications and requirements.
  • Audit products, processes, and/or systems per procedure.
  • Identify opportunities through root cause analysis.
  • Concept, design, and implement tools, fixtures, jigs, and templates.
  • Assist as needed with the assembly and installation of full-scale test specimens.
  • Safely and effectively use forklifts, overhead cranes and other heavy equipment.
  • Use CAD software as required. AutoCAD and Inventor preferred.
  • Participate and interact with continuous improvement teams.
  • Must be able to work well with little or no supervision.
  • Work closely with the manufacturing plant(s) to support business needs.
  • Overtime, flexible hours, and occasional travel are required with as little as 3 hour notice.
  • Provide a high level of accuracy in all aspects of the position.
  • Participates in AFS Continuous Improvement efforts by understanding his/her team's performance and actively implementing and supporting process improvements
  • Identification, maintenance, and calibration of all new and current gauging to meet quality system requirements.
  • Product performance testing to industry standards.
  • Inspection of test specimens to ensure accuracy and identify opportunities.
  • Have an effective working knowledge of all applicable testing standards.
  • Take clear and concise notes and reports, for reference by other depts.
  • Setup, installation, and performance testing to industry standards.
  • Complete inspections to quality standards.
  • Ability to train manufacturing personnel on quality/production related issues.
  • Provide education for associates pertaining to correct measurement methods.
  • Collaborate between manufacturing, purchasing, and design to provide performance data for any purchased parts and extrusions identified as suspect where receiving inspection does not have the tools or expertise to provide precise and accurate data.
  • Have an effective working knowledge of ECO's and author as needed for product maintenance and VAVE activities.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • BS degree in Engineering field (structural, mechanical or design degree preferred).
  • Minimum 1 year experience in technical design/applications engineering in this or a related industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand financial implications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and leadership skills.
  • Self-starter requiring minimal supervision.
