Minimum Job Qualifications

    • Minimum Qualifications – All candidates must meet the following requirements:
    • At least 19 years of age at the time of hire
    • Able to legally work in the United States
    • Possess a High School diploma or GED certificate of completion
    • Possess a valid State Driver’s License (Driving record from DMV is preferred)
    • Have no felony convictions that prohibit licensure by Illinois Department of Public Health
    • Have no factors incumbering EMS Licensure on Office Inspector General Exclusions Database.
    • Successfully complete all recruitment and selection components including, but not limited to, skills testing, detailed background investigation, and successfully pass the required post-offer processes: drug screen, baseline physical including vision and hearing exam, and essential physical demand testing
    • Obtain FEMA Independent Study courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 (within six months of hire)
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in effective decision-making, interpersonal communications and conflict resolution.
  • Certification of National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (preferred not required)
  • Licensure with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services a Paramedic (preferred not required)
  • Licensure with Illinois Department of Public Health as a Paramedic (Required)
  • Must have and maintain American Heart Association CPR Certification Healthcare provider or Instructor (Required)
  • Must have and maintain American Heart Association ACLS Certification Healthcare provider or Instructor (Required)

    Job Definition

    Paramedics render care of injured or sick patients in emergency and non- emergency situations in a pre-hospital. This job requires the ability to act quickly and efficiently, as sometimes the patient may be in a critical situation. Paramedics respond to emergency calls and and non- emergency to transport patients to medical facilities in addition to performing Basic and Advanced Life Support Care. Evening and weekend work are regularly required due to the nature of the role. Those well-suited to becoming an Paramedic are calm and friendly with a good understanding of basic medical terminology and procedures, physical strength, and great attention to detail.

    Distinguishing Characteristics

    The Paramedics render high quality pre-hospital care in Emergent and Non-Emergent situations under the Standard Operating Treatment Guidelines set forth by the Southwestern Illinois EMS System. The Paramedics must have good interpersonal communication skills interacting with co-workers, other Healthcare personnel, Law Enforcement, Fire departments, and families.

    Work Environment (Essential functions)

    Paramedics work both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather. They are required to do considerable kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting. Paramedics may be required to work in loud and often difficult situations. In addition, Paramedics may be exposed to diseases such as hepatitis-B and AIDS, as well as violence from drug overdose victims or mentally unstable patients. The work is not only physically strenuous, but also stressful, involving life-or-death situations and suffering patients. Many people find the work exciting and challenging and enjoy the opportunity to help others. Because emergency services function 24 hours a day, EMTs and paramedics have irregular working hours that add to job stress.

    Key Tasks and Duties

    Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain ambulance in a complete state of readiness
  • Respond to 911 calls for emergencies and other medical facilities for non-emergencies.
  • Respond and render prehospital care to incidents such as automobile accidents, heart attacks, slips and falls, childbirth, and gunshot wounds.
  • Assess nature patient's condition and extent of injury and treat within the scope of the Southwestern Illinois EMS SOGs.
  • Safety of all Emergency Personnel and Patients is the first priority in all situations
  • Secure all patients in ambulance for transport.
  • Safely transport patient to hospital or other care facility.
  • Transfer patients to healthcare facilities and provide a report to complete transfer of care to a higher level of care.
  • Accurately document and record trip using computer electronic patient charting application.
  • Replace used supplies.
  • Check and ensure equipment are in proper working order.
  • Decontaminate the interior of the ambulance.
  • Administer medications orally,Intravenously,  Sublingually, Nebulized, or Intramuscular, obtain and transmit for interpretation electrocardiograms (EKGs), and use monitors.
  • Perform other related tasks and duties as required
  • Must maintain Continuing Education National Registry Paramedic Certification (required if you have certification)
  • Must maintain Continuing Education related to Paramedic Licensure with Illinois Department of Public Health (required)
  • Must maintain Continuing Education related to Paramedic Technician Licensure with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (required if you have licensure)
  • Certification in CEVO, EVOC or FSVO (preferred not required)
  • Paramedic must remain in good standing with the Southwestern Illinois EMS System. Failure to comply with any directives or requirements set forth by the Southwestern Illinois EMS system can result in suspension or revocation of licensure.
