Position Purpose

The Charge Nurse is responsible for directing patient care for designated shifts. The purpose of this position is to supervise, provide and coordinate nursing care in compliance with facility policies and procedures and to evaluate residents' care needs and take appropriate action.

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises the work of Nurses, CNAs, PCAs and/or RAs on shift

Budget Responsibility: None

Essential Job Functions - Principal Accountabilities
  • Evaluates resident needs on shift and makes staff assignments to best meet those needs.
  • Supervises and evaluates all direct resident care and initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Assists staff nurses in their evaluation of resident needs and in direct resident care. Orders medications as prescribed.
  • Conducts resident rounds daily, reporting problems to nursing supervisor and initiating corrective action.
  • Identifies resident problems and emergency situations and initiates emergency care and "life-saving" measures in the absence of a physician.
  • Makes nursing assignments for the day.
  • Oversees shift turnover. Obtains, records, and provides sufficient information to implement appropriate follow-up action as necessary.
Other Job Functions
  • Provides direct LPN nursing care to residents as needed.
  • Participates in staff conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Education: Associates degree in Nursing, or equivalent is required.

Experience: Experience performing the essential functions of the position is desirable.

Certification/License: Ohio Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing is required. Candidates are required to attain and maintain CPR certification within 90 days after hire. State background check standards must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Must complete first aid training required by rule 3701-16-06 of the Ohio Administrative Code, within 60 days of hire.

  • Move resident as necessary, stretch, bend, stoop, squat, twist, crouch, kneel, and balance to access all resident body parts, observe skin color, detect vital signs and equipment alarms/messages.
  • Operate computer, read, remain in a stationary position, converse with others.
  • Legibly complete forms; perform data entry of information. Remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Converse with others, write legibly, read and comprehend written/verbal information. Communicate instructions or demonstrate tasks.
  • Lift and carry up to 35 pounds frequently; up to 75 pounds occasionally.
