Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director of Parks and Maintenance, the Custodian is responsible for cleaning, setting up, and caring for rooms, hallways, bathrooms, offices, and grounds of the Glencoe Park District, Takiff Center, Weinberg Family Recreation Center, Melvin Berlin Picnic Shelter, Glencoe Youth Services, and any other district facilities as assigned, including beach and boat houses. Four days on, three days off. Saturday through Tuesday, 8am to 6pm.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Ability to work independently while being available to assist staff as needed.
  • Strong public relations skills with a courteous demeanor at all times.
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily to fulfill the responsibilities of the Custodian position.

  • A valid Illinois Driver's License.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • All full-time employees must pass a criminal background check, a drug test, and physical exam, which the Glencoe Park District will cover.
Required Knowledge:

This position shall perform seasonal, custodial, and facility preparation tasks at the Takiff Center, Weinberg Recreation Center, and Glencoe Beach/Boating Facilities as assigned by the Assistant Director of Parks and Maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintenance
  • Perform custodial and maintenance duties in the care of district facilities, rooms, hallways, and adjacent grounds as required. Complete any duties when other custodial staff is absent. Complete the required daily maintenance schedule as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Clean and wash floors, walls, windows, tables, chairs, sills, and counters in assigned areas on a daily, weekly, or seasonal basis as assigned.
  • Dust, wipe, and keep all hallways, ledges, cabinet tops, fixtures, doors, and other surfaces clean.
  • Keep all restrooms sanitized and clean. Brush, sanitize, and wipe down all surfaces, partitions, handles, light fixtures, faucets, sinks, and toilets. Restock all paper supplies each night. Check all drains and other mechanical items to ensure proper weekly working conditions.
  • Empty garbage and recycling each shift. Sanitize can liners and surfaces weekly.
  • Maintain, restock, and clean all custodial supplies, work carts, and storage closets.
  • Minor repairs: light bulb, batteries, etc. as needed.
  • Perform snow removal as assigned.
Records and Reports
  • They are required to complete and submit a work checklist system to ensure high standards of cleanliness and maintenance at Takiff Center.
  • Refer to the facility schedule to prepare daily custodial, room set-up, and room clean-up priorities.
  • Submit a report of broken items that need fixing, replacing, or further cleaning to your supervisor at the end of each shift. Report any unsafe condition immediately to your supervisor.
Safety
  • Follow the proper use and care of all tools, equipment, and related Glencoe Park District property as utilized by the department.
  • Follow the safety policies and procedures implemented following the Glencoe Park District safety manual. Immediately report any accidents, incidents, or violations to the Assistant Director of Parks and Maintenance.
  • Use all provided personal protective equipment as required.
  • Attend required in-service training, meetings, and orientations.

Work Environment:

Work usually takes place indoors, in dirty conditions. The Custodian will be exposed to cleaning chemicals, garbage, and human/animal waste. Some work may take place outdoors in poor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally loud. Proper hearing protection will be provided if necessary.

Hours:

Due to the nature of park district programming, evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are to be expected, and the work week may likely exceed the designated hours. The Executive Director or other department heads might also direct the Custodian to perform other assignments not included in this job description, which is subject to periodic review and/or revision.
