Description
Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Police Division of the Alamogordo Police Department, in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
Recruitment Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent;
- Must be at least 18 years of age on the date of application;
- Valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of employment; with a good driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
- Must be CPR/First Aid Certified within sixty (60) days of employment;
- Must not have any felony convictions, domestic violence or DWI convictions, or any other convictions for crimes indicating lack of character or moral turpitude;
- Must be a United States Citizen;
- Must successfully pass a drug screening test, a polygraph test, or a voice stress analysis and a thorough background investigation;
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Responds to non-emergency calls, conducts traffic-related patrols in the city, issues citations, and serves subpoenas, civil papers, and other legal documents promptly and accurately;
- Patrols City with emphasis on traffic safety, assisting the public (stranded motorists, providing directions, providing aid), answering complaints, and enforcing ordinances;
- Participates in subsequent court proceedings to testify and provide an opinion;
- Participates in daily meetings and briefings to disseminate information regarding current operational status with other units within the department and with other law enforcement agencies;
- Prepares reports associated with minor offenses and enters data into the computer system;
- Responsible for knowledge of City geography, physical conditions, street names, numbers, locations, and other matters affecting response to a call for service;
- Performs vehicle, personnel, and property identification checks;
- Assists in planning and implementation of activities involving department training;
- Investigates minor offenses, including securing the crime scene, performing surveillance, preparing required documentation, and collecting evidence;
- Enforce city ordinances relating to parking complaints;
- Investigates traffic crashes and traffic complaints;
- Provides security and escort during special events, funerals, parades, fairs, and wide loads;
- Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and maintains current knowledge of traffic control devices and traffic-related ordinances;
- Conducts preliminary first aid and CPR procedures prior to EMS arrival;
- Responsible for maintaining current knowledge and training on enforcement ordinances and procedures;
- Maintains vehicles, weapons, equipment, and the building in a professional, functional, and presentable condition; performs minor department facility, vehicle, and equipment repairs;
- Assists with community relations projects, including the implementation of programs that increase public awareness of police operations and procedures;
- Assists City ambulance contractor in lifting and moving patients and renders first aid to injured persons;
- Responsible for Professional Standards outlined in the Canon of Ethics;
- May participate in special assignments as designated by Alamogordo Police Chief;
- Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
- Interacts professionally and Provides excellent customer service to ensure high operational and service standards are met and maintained for the Citizens of Alamogordo; and
- Perform duties according to City of Alamogordo Ordinances, Citywide and Departmental Policies and Procedures, and any applicable Laws regulated by an outside authority.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned;
- Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
- Will be required to work variable shifts, including holidays and weekends;
- Maintain the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Departmental rules and regulations;
- Investigation and traffic crash prevention methods;
- Identification records processes and procedures; and
- First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures.
- Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; understand and follow instructions;
- Perform tasks and other daily activities in a positive and professional manner alongside employees of varied backgrounds and personalities;
- Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position's essential duties and responsibilities;
- Exercise common sense and good judgment in the performance of essential duties;
- Safely use vehicles and specialized equipment;
- Operate a computer to prepare records and reports;
- Apply investigative traffic techniques, control traffic, and accident scenes;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, the city attorney's office, other departmental employees, community and school organizations, and the general public;
- Maintain accurate records or reports;
- Maintain appropriate necessary certifications; and
- Demonstrate and maintain physical endurance, agility, dexterity, and strength necessary to perform required duties.

Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus;
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and with explosives;
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration; and
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
PAY
Pay range is based on position.
INSURANCE BENEFITS
- Medical and Dental coverage are paid 60% by the employer and 40% by the employee.
- A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided at no cost to the employee.
- Vision and Disability coverage are available at 100% of the cost being paid by the employee.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
- 457 Deferred Compensation Plan is available voluntarily, with all contributions being made by the employee.
The City of Alamogordo participates in the New Mexico Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA).
The following information pertains to a member of the PERA plan on or after July 1, 2013 (Tier 2):
PERA Retirement Plan Tier 2
- 85 or age 65 with five (5) years of service
- Five (5) year vesting period
- 90% pension maximum (2% pension factor)
- Five (5) year final average salary calculation
- Employee contribution equals 7.55% pre-tax
- Employer total contribution equals 15.90%
- Retiree health, NM plan, requires a 1% employee contribution
PAID HOLIDAYS
Ten (10) paid Holiday days per year (New Year's, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day).
FLOATING HOLIDAY
One (1) Floating Holiday per fiscal year.
PTO
Employees begin accruing Paid Time Off ( PTO) immediately. For the first five (5) years an employee can earn 21.5 days per year. Accrual rates increase incrementally after five (5) years of service and based on subsequent service years.
PTO is available for use after the introductory period is successfully completed.
PTO cash-out options based on accrued balance.
