Audiologist (Newborn hearing Screening Manager)

The Newborn Hearing Screening Manager will have oversight of all aspects of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program and related follow up as determined by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Full responsibility of the Newborn Hearing Screening Program at Boston Medical Center which adheres to guidelines published by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Health.
- Maintains, and when appropriate, develops policies and procedures for screening personnel and trains and supervises personnel relative to: screening methods, infection control, documentation and reporting of screening results, communication of results to parents and appropriate staff (i.e. nurses, physicians, residents, etc.), and scheduling appropriate follow up appointments when necessary.
- Interacts and works with related services (i.e. Speech Pathology, Neonatology, Pediatrics, etc.) and refers, when necessary, to Audiology, Otolaryngology, Speech Pathology, and other services (i.e. Early Intervention) to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Gives lectures/in-services to the Nursery, NICU and Pediatric Staff within and outside Boston Medical Center pertaining to the Newborn Hearing Screening Program, follow up testing, risk factors for hearing loss, etc.
- Conducts annual reviews of the Newborn Hearing Screener staff and develops Performance Improvement Plan(s) when necessary.
- Attends meeting scheduled by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts regarding the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program(s) to keep current with changes in mandates and policies.
- Maintains, and when appropriate, develops an electronic system of record keeping including all pertinent data (i.e. number of monthly and yearly births, number of referrals, high risk births, etc.) that is required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Reviews Screening records monthly to monitor referral rates and communicates pertinent data to the Director of Audiology.
- Monitors operation of screening equipment and develops/implements a plan for continuation of service in the event of equipment malfunction and arranges for calibration and/or repair. Additionally, communicates the need for new/updated equipment to the Director of Audiology when appropriate.
- Monitors inventory of supplies and communicates with the Nursery Nurse Manager to order more supplies when necessary.
- Maintains, and when appropriate, develops forms, letters and communication methods necessary to implement the Newborn Hearing Screening Program.
- Maintains, and when appropriate, develops procedures for Nursery/NICU personnel regarding provision for the screening of missed infants and infants who are transferred.
- Oversees scheduling of follow up appointments for infants who did not pass or have missed their Newborn Hearing Screening.
- Carries out the essential responsibilities and duties listed in the Job Description for 'Senior Audiologist' and/or 'Audiologist.'
- Meets Hospital-wide standards in the following areas:
- Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided congruent with AIDET standards.
- Utilizes Hospital's attributes as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
- Follows established Infection Control and Safety Procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree.
May also consider Ph.D., Sc.D., M.A., or M.S. degrees in Audiology.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to practice Audiology.
Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) awarded by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of one year of active participation in a newborn hearing screening program.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to supervise and train newborn hearing screening staff and coordinate the 24/7 hearing screening mandate.
- Ability interact and develop a close working relationship with the Nursery and NICU staff and directors.
- Knowledge of sources for providing speech-language therapy and aural rehabilitation (i.e. Early Intervention) to children with hearing loss.
- Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of Audiology.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and counseling patients and parents of children with hearing loss.
- Ability to coach and provide training to medical and non-medical personnel in Audiology.
- Ability to clearly document and maintain records to ensure optimal patient care and service.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain harmonious relationships.
- Ability to read, write and communication effectively.
- Computer proficiency inclusive of the ability to access, interpret and manage computerized data/information.
- Working knowledge of standard Microsoft programs (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers.
