Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at VCU/VCU Health System is recruiting for an open-rank level position in the area of transplant surgery. Duties will include all responsibilities of the team attendings (inpatient rounds, clinics, consults, surgeries as primary and assistant surgeon, call, education, quality assurance). The VCU transplant team procures its own donor organs, and this position will also serve in support of that mission.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching : Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of transplant surgery.

Research : Faculty member will establish clinical research projects with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. In addition, they will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in their research laboratory.

Service : Faculty will serve on departmental and/or university committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, i.e., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Clinical : Clinical responsibilities are broad and include deceased and living donor kidney and liver transplantation, and pancreas transplantation. Additional opportunities exist with an extensive multidisciplinary hepato-biliary surgery practice as well as dialysis access (hemo and peritoneal).

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be board certified/board eligible in transplant surgery or equivalent
  • ASTS fellowship training in multi-organ transplantation and procurement
  • Able to meet licensing requirements in Virginia, and be UNOS certified or eligible
  • Prior experience teaching residents and medical students
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Board certification in general surgery will be expected during the course of the appointment, commensurate with board requirements
  • Training in robotic surgery
