JOB SUMMARY

1. Job Summary:Responsible for handling theinstruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Maintainthe necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during theoperative procedure, and to be constantly vigilant in the maintenance of thesterile field. Responsible for procedures related to cleaning, sterilizing, andassemble of equipment, supplies and instruments for use in medical and surgicalinterventions.

2. Education: High school graduate or equivalent with courses inphysical and natural sciences and mathematics preferred. Graduate of anaccredited Surgical Technologist Program or previous surgical scrub experience.

3. Credentials:BLS; Surgical TechnologistCertification preferred

4. Compliance: The employee will comply with the Compliance Policy,all laws, rules, regulations, and standards of conduct relating to theposition. The employee has a duty toreport any suspected violations of the law or the standards of conduct to hisor her immediate supervisor, Compliance Officer or the Chief Executive Office.

5. JobKnowledge and Skills: Two years experience in surgical scrub experience required. Possess good communication skills andcontribute to completing the required work of the team. Possess good decision-making skills, organizationalskills, and able to adapt to change and flexibility, detail oriented.

6. EmploymentVariables: Department hours ofoperation as well as requirements for working scheduled On-Call.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Responsibility Statement: Prepares environment for surgical case.

  1. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative areas according to need.
  2. Select and prepare supplies and instruments for the sterile field.
  3. Coordinate room preparation with circulator.
  4. Assures all equipment is present and functioning prior to use.
  5. Demonstrates competence in cleaning and preparing rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning.
  6. Restocks rooms, storeroom, specialty carts and other areas as needed.
2. ResponsibilityStatement: Provides assistance tosurgeon during surgical procedures.

a. Passes correct instrumentation, supplies, and sutureas needed by the physician.

b. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptictechniques and procedures.

c. Observes and reports contamination and/or breaks inaseptic technique. Initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur.

d. Counts all sharps, sponges, instruments and otheritems as dictated by hospital policy.

e. Accurately records, handles, and labels specimens andcultures.

3. ResponsibilityStatement: Provides for preparationof sterile instruments and equipment.

a. Sterilizesinstruments, equipment, surgical linens and supplies such as surgical packs,treatment trays, etc., according to established procedures.

b. Assembles packsof supplies, instruments, dressing and treatment trays, etc., according toestablished procedures.

c. Labels, seals,and maintains control records of items possessed.

d. Disassembles,inspects, performs minor maintenance or reconditioning, recommends repair,cleans and reassembles surgical instruments, needles, linen, and electrical ormechanical equipment.

e. Performs workrelated duties such as general housekeeping, minor maintenance of areaequipment and surveillance of area supply stock levels.

4. ResponsibilityStatement: Prepares and maintainsdocumentation.

a. Assists inupdating preference cards and communicates channels to appropriate personnel.

b. Demonstratesknowledge of specialty area assignment. Maintains adequate inventory levels.

c. Maintains andmodifies tray instrument lists and logs as needed.

d. Maintains recordsof instruments or supplies sent for repair or loaned to other institutions orphysicians.

e. Participates inthe evaluation of new supplies, equipment and instruments.

f. Provides accuratedocumentation on charges and inventory items in electronic documentationsystem.

5. ResponsibilityStatement: Provides a safeenvironment for patient, self, and team.
