Physician Assistant

Function as a Physician Assistant and change agent incorporating the primary role of PA and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher, and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes. This growing outpatient practice incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to patient care involving physicians, mid-level providers, dieticians, and certified diabetes educators to treat patients with obesity. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a panel of patients independently as well as work with the multidisciplinary team in a shared care model.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assure clinical competency and expertise in areas of weight management, endocrinology and diabetes.
- Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for patients with weight management, diabetes and endocrine diseases.
- Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
- Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for weight management, endocrine/diabetes patients, with regard to patient condition and ag and follow universal precautions.
- Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
- Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
- Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
- Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
- Initiate and coordinate referrals to other healthcare team members or agencies.
- Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
- Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
- Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise.
- Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
- Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations
- Incorporate research findings into practice.
- Participate in the development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
- Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
- Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
- Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.
- Participate in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.
- Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
- Assist in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care.
- Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics; constructively manages conflict.
- Manage the talents, strengths, and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group, while providing each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit. Work to assure that all employees are respected and treated consistent with University policies in regard to equal employment opportunity and diversity.
- Inspire and motivate others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and driving organizational results.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated experience in the area of clinical practice is required.
- Experience in the area of weight management is highly desirable.
- Experience in the area of diabetes is highly desirable.
8 half-days per week in the Weight Management outpatient clinic.
Clinics are likely to be scheduled Monday-Friday in the morning, afternoon, or evening; however, Saturday clinics may be needed if clinic space is not available.
