Job Summary:

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine (SOM) is currently seeking applicants for a full-time, non-tenure core faculty educator position in pathology. The ideal candidate will have a history of teaching excellence in medical education and the leadership skills to serve as core faculty in integrated courses in phases 1, 2 or 3 of our curriculum. The selected candidate will provide instruction in basic science/foundational courses across multiple disciplines including Pathology, Histology, Pathophysiology, Physiology and Cell Biology, and serve as facilitator for small group discussion in case-based learning, problem-based learning, and other small group sessions. In addition, this position will collaborate with other clinical and basic science faculty for the development of clinical cases to emphasize basic science foundational concepts and will participate in the development and review of formative and summative assessment items. The position is a full-time academic position without clinically related duties. 

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks: 

phase 1: medical students

·       Develop the goals, learning objectives, prework assignments, pre- and post-test assessment questions, and any supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 1 sequence (may identify faculty from other colleges to assist).

·       Assist in developing cases for the case-based curriculum.

·       Run large group interactive sessions and facilitate case-based learning sessions 3 mornings per week (M/ W/ F) during year 1 and 3 half-days per week during year 2 (2 afternoons, 1 morning), as assigned.

·       Participate in the clinical correlations and illustrate where there is horizontal and vertical integration of the basic science materials.

·       Routinely teach and model professionalism and ethics.

·       Other activities may include:

o   Social gatherings (some of these may occur during evenings)

o   Provide a base of support for curriculum activities as a contributing and collaborative faculty member

o   Assist students with academic issues as they occur, including, but not limited to, providing appropriate office hours

o   Provide student and faculty feedback in a timely and professional manner

o   Assist with students’ self-directed learning questions

o   Attend White Coat Ceremony in the fall, in addition to any other SOM events in which faculty participation is required

phase 2: medical students

·       Provide support, guidance, and mentoring to each student during their clerkship year, as needed.

·       Review reflections/experiences of students.

·       Participate in developing and delivering sessions that integrate the foundational/basic and clinical sciences, as needed. 

phase 3: medical students

·       Continue to provide a mentoring relationship to students.

·       Review and edit students’ personal statements, as requested.

·       Write letter of support for residency application, as requested.

·       Attend post-Match Party in March and Medical School Graduation in May.

·       Prepare for, attend, and participate in monthly faculty meetings.

·       Work on projects within at least one working group, such as OSCE case development; case-based learning; communication skills; write-up, oral case presentation and clinical reasoning; professionalism and ethics; mentoring; feedback and evaluation.

·       Participate in and facilitate faculty development sessions and retreats (which occur periodically throughout the year), as needed.
