In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, manages a comprehensive program of therapeutic activities and learning experiences that further the psycho-social, developmental, cognitive and intellectual growth of hospitalized children. Creates a child friendly environment that reduces the potentially traumatic effects of hospitalization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

-Demonstrates developmentally appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to assess and interact with a diverse population of pediatric patients and their families.

-Demonstrates knowledge of general pediatric illness, terminology, etiology, and disease process.

-Assists patients in coping with the stress of hospitalization, illness and loss through developmentally-based / psychologically-sound child life interventions.

-Provides a therapeutic and safe environment that supports patients' growth and development, ages 0-21.

-Maintains playroom utilized by a diverse pediatric population, and all child life resources.

-Participates in patient / family teaching activities. Uses developmentally appropriate and medically accurate teaching resources / techniques that increase patients' knowledge and support emotional needs.

-Demonstrates excellent communication skills regarding obtaining and sharing data pertinent to patients' needs / condition, and documentation in patient's medical record.

-Supports in-hospital / home tutoring services that reduce loss of educational ground. Assists families with coordination of activities, through the use of Education Inc.

-Manages on-going student intern / community volunteer program on pediatrics.

-Responsible for coordination of all unit-based, child life special events and activities.

-Represents and communicates child life and psycho-social issues of pediatric health care to other health care professionals, students, and community.

-Plans, implements and evaluates child life services and activities.

-Implements child life services within constraints and expectations of the hospital.

-Participates is unit-based and hospital-wide committees, projects, educational activities, and special events.

Qualifications:

Master's prepared. Prefer CLS certification or eligibility and intent to sit for Child Life Specialist certification exam within 6 months of hire.
