Qualifications:

- CCRN certification preferred within two years
- Evidence of completing a Critical Care Course is required OR completion of AACN ECCO within 9 months of hire

Responsibilities:
Job Summary
The Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for managing and providing direct patient care to the critically ill patient. The patient acuity ranges from very critical to step down level.
Patients Served
This position is responsible for the following age groups of patients: pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
Duties
- Possesses knowledge of and maintains competency in professional nursing principles, practices, concepts and procedures as applied to the care of critically ill patients, the RN takes at least one critical care related course per year
- Maintains current knowledge of critical care diagnostic and treatment techniques such as chest tube insertion, central line placement, intubations and hemodynamic monitoring
- Able to recognize normal cardiac rhythms and any deviations from normal. Maintains competency in basic 12-lead ECG interpretation
- Maintains skill in operating and monitoring complex equipment such as mechanical ventilators, cardiac monitors, etc.
- Utilizes the nursing diagnosis/nursing process to assess, identify issues/outcomes, plan, implement and evaluate the plan of care. The plan of care is family centered, age-appropriate, developmentally and culturally relevant
- Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by the patient's condition
- Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient's immediate condition or needs to take immediate and decisive patient-focused action
- Develops plan of care that is individualized for the patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team
- Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by the physician in an accurate and timely manner
- Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by the individualized plan of care
- Provides individualized patient/family education customized to the patient and his/her family
- Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress towards problem resolution. Documents observations, nursing interventions, monitoring data and other relevant data to the patient's care in a legible, understandable form and in a timely manner
- Initiates emergency resuscitative measures based on ACLS and PALS protocols
- Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family and staff
- Manages appropriately the interface between the patient and technology that may be invasive and complex; so that human needs for a safe, respectful, healing humane and caring environment are established and maintained
- Makes decisions and acts on behalf of the patients and their families in an ethical manner, and is delivered in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient's and family's diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights
- Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering patient care
- Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of critical care nursing practice, participating in quality of care activities to initiate positive changes in nursing practice
- Continually evaluates one's own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statures and regulations, identifying short and long-term professional goals
- Contributes to the professional development of peers and others through professional, respectful communication and teamwork. Interacts with others in a professional, responsible, respectful manner
- Participates in planning and presenting continuing education in the critical care patient population to co-workers at least once every two years
- Performs other duties as assigned
Lifting Requirements:
Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with help.
