Responsibilities

Role:

Registered Nurse jobs are responsible for providing a wide variety of professional nursing services which focus on the provision of quality patient care consistent with Franciscan Health System (FHS) standards/values, applicable regulatory requirements and scope of practice for the nursing profession.  Work also includes developing, implementing and assessing the patient plan of care during time of stay in collaboration with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and the patient/family.  An incumbent is engaged in direct patient care, including assessing, planning, coordinating, evaluating and delegating work to members of the patient care team, and for providing education and consultation with patients, families, physicians and other staff members in implementing appropriate nursing interventions for optimal patient care.

Work is performed under standards of safety and care that provide instruction/guidance for taking care of issues and patient needs in the absence of a physician.  Requires the use of judgment and critical thinking skills in making decisions regarding patient care (within the scope of practice), including knowledge and integration of evidence-based practices (EBP) through standards, resources and data, and in the efficient utilization of staff/resources.  Work involves continuous contact with physicians, patients, patient families, community agencies, patient care staff and management.  An incumbent is accountable for the quality of care provided to patients, and has the authority to direct care, provide education, seek resources at the unit/department level, and delegate appropriate tasks.

Medical Surgical Orthopedic:

29 bed unit with private spacious rooms. Our orthopedic specialty patient population is complex spine, joint replacement and fracture patients. It is a great feeling to see our patients regain their mobility after surgery. We have a specialty population and a special group of staff who pride themselves in competence and teamwork. This fast paced environment allows our employees to assist in pre-surgical work as well as recovery after surgery. Our staff work well with each other and call their peers their work family.

What you'll do:

Provide pre surgical education and stabilization as well as pain management. Good surgery prep positively contributes to patient outcomes. SJMC is a level II trauma center so we get a fair number of fractures and injuries. The Medical Surgical Orthopedic nurse gets the patient ready for surgery or splinting and then begins the recovery process to ready the patient for discharge. We work with braces, collars, adaptive equipment and do lots of dressing changes.

Why choose us?

The Medical Surgical Orthopedic team demonstrates compassion and teamwork daily. We pride ourselves in shaping new grads (residence) to become quality staff. We provide a learning environment where the whole team succeeds. We encourage learning and knowledge sharing. We live the mission every day.
