EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Update and revise seismic safety and safety elements for the Planning Department and other County departments.
  • Process surface mining permits and reclamation plans.
    Perform earth resource studies for comprehensive planning including such factors as seismic safety, safety conservation, slope stability, and open space elements of the county general plan and its constituent area general plans.
  • Provide technical direction to Planners and others doing field investigations and review and analyses of seismic and geological hazard reports; evaluate and review reports for soil conditions and soils engineering in relation to private sewage disposal systems.
  • Review, evaluate, and field check grading and building plans for proposed industrial, commercial, and residential developments, and correlate them with geological studies and investigations to identify hazards such as slide areas and earthquake faults.
  • Take necessary action to assure that effects of slide, earthquake, and other hazards are eliminated or minimized; determine the requirements for exploratory techniques to identify existing geological conditions and recommend specific corrective action.
  • Provide legal assistance and serve as consultant in geology to various County departments, as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from a recognized college with a Bachelor's degree in geology or engineering geology.

Experience: Two years of professional engineering geology work which included analyzing and making recommendations for the solutions of geological problems encountered in the planning, design, and construction of engineered structures.

Other Requirements:

License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.
Possession of a valid license as a Professional Geologist issued by the California State Board for Geologists and Geophysicists.
Possession of a valid specialty California certification Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG).

Knowledge of: The principles and practices of physical and historical geology; Engineering geology; geological formations associated with seismic hazards; geology as applied to civil engineering; the causes and prevention of land slippage and foundation failures; geological concepts as they pertain to planning and surface mining; survey, mapping, drafting, and photographic techniques as the apply to engineering geology.

Ability to: Collect, analyze, and interpret data pertaining to earth resources, and analyze and evaluate local geological conditions in relation to their seismic and environmental impact.
Physical Requirements: The position will require the completion of site visits which will require extensive walking, many times over uneven terrain. The incumbent will also be exposed to inclement weather.
