Respiratory Therapist - Atlanta, GA

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
Provides respiratory care for patients in adult, neonatal care, and/or outpatient CPAP centers .
Employees may perform ECG, EEG, pulmonary function testing, & bronchoscopy and any other
testing as deemed within the scope of practice by national standards.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assesses patient's respiratory status by incorporating relevant clinical information
including vital signs, chest X-rays, and ABG values.
2. Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and performs associated critical care duties
such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
3. Performs arterial punctures and obtains arterial blood samples from arterial lines.
Performs analysis of blood gases.
4. May attend high-risk deliveries as member of Neonatal Resuscitation Team.
5. Performs noninvasive oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring.
6. Obtains and analyzes arterial blood gas samples.
7. May perform pulmonary function testing and cardiopulmonary exercise testing after
training is complete in the Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab.
8. May perform surfactant replacement therapy (NICU).
9. May assess respiratory status of newborn infants upon delivery (NICU)
10 Performs endotracheal intubation, and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation as
required.
11. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies
and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment
malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injuryaccident to Manager.
12. May assist physicians with Bronchoscopies, EBUS, Navigation or CRYO when each
competency is completed.
13. May perform EEG's after completion of competency.
14. Performs diagnostic cardiac testing including EKG's, rhythm strips, and 24 hour holter
monitoring.
15. Performs charge and preceptor duties.
16. CPAP Department Only:
ï‚· Instructs patients on the importance of CPAP and how to use all CPAP
equipment.
ï‚· Follows up with patients that are in their first month of CPAP use.
ï‚· Checks to see that patients are being compliant with their CPAP.
ï‚· Assists with patient resupply.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
1. Graduation from an accredited respiratory care program with an Associate's
degree or equivalent and RRT credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory
Care.
2. New Graduates must be registry eligible and have completed a registry eligible
accredited respiratory care program. New graduates may be hired as Level II
therapist but will be required to obtain their RRT (registry) within six months of
their start date to continue employment at Northside.
3. Therapist that have greater than 5 years of clinical experience and have a CRT
or CRTT may be hired, are eligible for a Level II position and will fall under the
Grandfather clause not requiring them to take their registry.
4. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) by the
American Heart Association. **NRP is only required when rotating to the NICU or
attending deliveries.
5. Maintains proficiency in arterial blood sampling techniques as prescribed by the
hospital and/or JCAHO.
6. Valid State License
7. Minimum of one-year experience with non-invasive pressure devices. (CPAP
Department Only)

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY THE STATE OF GEORGIA
1. Credentialed as a registered or certified Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
through the National Board for Respiratory Care.
2. Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with credentials as a
Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) from Georgia Composite State Board of
Medical Examiners (CPAP Department Only)

SUPERVISION GIVEN/RECEIVED
Reports To: Respiratory Care Clinical Supervisor or CPAP Program Coordinator (CPAP
Department Only)
Supervises:
WORKING CONDITIONS
Possible exposure to infectious/contagious diseases, hazardous chemicals and materials,
needlesticks, blood and body fluids. All employees are offered the opportunity to receive the
Hepatitis B vaccination series.
