Job Description Location: Chicago, IL Hospital: RUSH University Medical Center Department: Dept Of Professional NursPract Work Type: Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) Shift: Shift 1 Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:00:00 AM - 4:30:00 PM) Summary: The Nurse Scientist assumes a complex leadership and consulting role as an expert to mentor nursing staff in the conduct, dissemination, integration, and application of research to improve professional nursing practice and patient care. They provide leadership in research programs related to complex healthcare issues. They provide training and consultation to support individual or team research projects that promote and advance the use of research-based practice. The Nurse Scientist will advance nursing and interprofessional research across the system to align with the RUSH Mission/Vision/Values and promote optimal staff and clinical outcomes. The Nurse Scientist is accountable for the system wide development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of innovative nursing research programs using scientific models, methods and concepts that support and promote the conduct of clinical research, research utilization, and professional development to improve organizational systems and health outcomes for those receiving nursing care. The Nurse Scientist will be responsible for positioning RUSH to become a national/global leader in nursing research. They make the challenge of research a reality for front line nurses and exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Responsibilities: Principal Duties and Responsibilities: RESEARCH EXPERTISE: Knowledge of scientific research models, concepts, theories and methodologies, particularly as they relate to professional nursing practice and improved patient care outcomes. Works directly with RUSH nurse investigator(s) in addressing specific research questions, creating data files, data analysis and interpretation. Provides leadership as an expert in nursing research, initiating research independently and collaboratively. Applies for grant funding. Presents and publishes research findings. Assists in identifying and provides consultation on submission of potential grants to support RUSH Nursing Research. Develops or assists in the development of education programs related to research and research-related activities, supporting professional growth and skill development; conducts training and/or oversees delivery of training. Identifies current trends in clinical research, evidence-based practice and research utilization and knowledge needed by staff to remain up to date. Keeps abreast of research and relevant clinical information to identify research needs and implement changes in policy and practice. Promotes implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice. Uses specialized expertise to assess and analyze problem areas in programs or clinical nursing practice. Uses relevant theory and methodologies to design, measure, and test new interventions to clinical nursing problems. Participate in collaborative research efforts with other healthcare disciplines. Ensure the dissemination of research and evidence-based findings through local, national and international journals, publications and presentations as well as through internal communication. Ability to use an analytical framework, such as scientific research and nursing processes, to create an environment that facilitates research utilization in the delivery of patient care. LEADERSHIP: As a member of the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship, identifies and implements additional strategies for increasing the visibility Nursing Research within RUSH and within the professional nursing community. Provides leadership and resources to support the overall research and dissemination activities for RUSH nurses. Assists in developing RUSH nursing research budget: Advises RUSH CNO’s and Director of Clinical Research as to what should be included in the Nursing Research Budget as for example: internal funding for nursing research; travel to conferences (local, regional, and national); cost of research posters. Creates and sustains an environment that facilitates the integration of nursing research to improve the delivery of care and professional nursing practice. Supports the integration of nursing and research. Supports and facilitates methods of inquiry in such areas as clinical research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement that support individual, program, departmental and system objectives. Collaborates with the system chief nursing officers, other nurse leaders, and the RUSH Nursing Research Councils on a strategic plan for nursing research and evidence-based practice goals/deliverables that align with the future direction of RUSH. Provides leadership in collaborating with CNOs and Magnet Coordinators in meeting research requirements for Magnet designation to ensure all organizations are meeting Magnet Standards for Nursing Research. Maintains currency of knowledge regarding AACN and AONE initiatives and resources designed to bolster academic and service partnerships. MENTORING: Acts as a role model supporting the use of nursing research and research utilization as the basis for professional nursing practice. Serves as a mentor and consultant to RUSH nurses and other healthcare providers in matters related to research and research utilization. Facilitate the development of future nurse researchers by supporting the activities of the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship. Facilitates Nursing Research and educates RUSH Nurses as appropriate (individually or in groups addressing new and current/existing projects). Mentor front line nurses to understand, evaluate and apply research while creating a link between evidence-based practice and research. Mentors nurses in the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and paper/poster presentations. COLLABORATION and CONSULTANT: Collaborates with other nurse scientists and researchers to advance nursing research and scholarship development across the RUSH Health System (e.g., conducting System wide research). As a member of the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship, develops and convenes joint educational and service offerings bringing together nursing leadership, nursing staff, nursing faculty, and students across the RUSH Health System (e.g., Clinical Grand Rounds, Small Bites, On-line Journal Club). Participates in planning, development, implementation and sustaining all Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship programs/activities (RUSH Nurse Research Fellowship, CCRS intranet). Actively supports and identifies opportunities for advancement and recognition throughout the RUSH Health System (e.g., assist staff in crafting applications for external recognition, assist with building evidence for continuing on the Magnet journey) for front line nurses and nurse leaders. Conveys understanding of principles for nursing research as a member of individual RUSH Nursing Research Committee’s and RUSH System Wide Nursing Research Committee; discusses ways nursing research can be developed, conducted, and presented across the RUSH System. Identifies opportunities for multidisciplinary research collaboration. Collaborates with colleagues across disciplines regarding the conduct of research and utilization of research findings in practice and education. Collaborates in establishing and supporting a system for the recognition of research-related accomplishments and achievements by employees. Collaborates with nursing leadership and others to create the research mission and vision. Consultant to nurses and others who wish to develop inquiry-based activities that support current practice. Other information: Education/ Knowledge: Doctoral Degree in Nursing required (PhD, DNP, DNS) required. Five or more years of progressively responsible and directly related research experience required. Current Illinois Registered Nurse Licensure required. ACRP (Association of Clinical Research Professionals) certification required. One or more nursing certifications are required. Eligible for an academic appointment in Rush College of Nursing to foster scholarly success across academia and service. Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care. Skills: Excellent communication skills are required to lead, influence, teach and persuade others. Customer-service focused, with the ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees within the organization, and with key external customers and vendors. Strong networking capabilities. Ability to lead teams, develop consensus and manage complex systems of care and operations is required. Analytical ability is required. Advanced information systems and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and survey methods) are required. Interact effectively with others in difficult situations is required.
