POSITION SUMMARY:

The Personal Trainer is responsible for helping individual members achieve personal fitness goals in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with Y policies and procedures. In addition, every position in the YMCA of East Tennessee is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the Y's core values - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides personalized instruction, training, and plan development to members on the safe and effective techniques to order to attain their fitness goals.

2. Keeps accurate attendance records.

3. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living and fitness. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.

4. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the Y.

5. Ensure weights and other equipment is properly stowed according and report deficiencies immediately to supervisors in accordance with Y policies and procedures.

6. Provide fitness testing and detailed instruction with current automated member/fitness workout tracking system.

7. Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.

8. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required. Must be proficient in Daxko Engage software.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

There are no education requirements. At least one year of experience in personal training is preferred. Area(s) of expertise certifications and training required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to quickly changing room temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Frequently required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to lift or move up to 100 pounds. Must be able to explain and demonstrate proper technique on all fitness equipment and/or exercises that are

recommended to members.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees of the organization.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, COURSES:

  • Current citizen CPR or higher; required for hire, may extend until next New Employee Orientation.
  • National or YMCA Strength and Conditioning Certification; required at hire and must maintain certification.
  • Safety Training Courses; required to complete before start work, provided by the Y.
  • New Employee Orientation; required to attend before start work, provided by the Y.
  • Additional training, licenses, and courses may be required throughout employment.
