SUMMARY: The primary responsibilities of this position include the direction of nursing care and all related activities of the Operating Room, providing optimal staffing of the department, performing activities which result in patient and physician satisfaction, coordinating the availability of all equipment needs according to physician requests, providing for maintenance of adequate drugs and supplies, education and supervision of personnel, and environmental control.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing is required.

  2. Currently licensed to practice nursing in the state

  3. 2 years of experience in the operating room is preferred.

  4. Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.

  5. ACLS Certification

  6. PALS Certification

  7. POSITION DUTIES

a. Supervises and directs nursing care given to patients within the department, according to nursing principles.

i. Coordinates flow of patients through the department. ii. Communicates intra- and inter-departmentally: • Cancellations and add-on cases. • Patient/visitor/surgeon complaints or problems. • Late start cases. • Information necessary to promote safe continuity of care. • Need for materials and supplies. iii. Maintains continuity of care in accordance with Facility policies through communication with Anesthesia and Nurse Manager/Administrator. iv. Ensures measures to provide safety. This includes monitoring cleanliness, sterility, traffic control and adherence to infection control principles. vi. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic technique and procedures. vi. Supervises and directs the activities of personnel in the OR. vii. Ensures availability of all equipment and supplies required for operation of clinical area. vi. Applies policies and objective of the facility to ensure consistent quality of nursing care. vii. Demonstrates cooperative work attitude toward and with co-employees, management, patients, visitors and physician. viii. Communicates and promotes a continuous quality improvement commitment.

ix. Ensures the patient’s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality. x. Possesses clinical skills necessary to provide quality care to all patient age populations-from pediatric to geriatric patient. xi. Provides physical, emotional and spiritual need of patients and implements appropriate nursing interventions. xii. Utilizes computer system in work activities as appropriate. xii. Other duties as assigned.

b. Provides optimal qualified personnel for the Operating Room. i. Plans and directs daily personnel assignments, delegating specific duties and tasks, and monitoring their completion.

c. To perform the tasks delegated to the “circulating” role.

i. Checks room for needed supplies and prepares room for specific patient and procedure. ii. Assist in transporting patient to O.R. and checks patient record for appropriate pre-op preparation and procedures (i.e. lab, x-ray, appropriate permits). iii. Performs and/or directs appropriate surgical prep. iv. Completes documentation for O.R. records, laboratory requisitions, and patient chart including medications and physician orders. v. Directs proper care of instruments, supplies, sterilization, and storage of equipment. vi. Supervises and assists with the proper, safe positioning of the patient. vii. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts and documentation of same. viii. Identifies, labels, and cares for all surgical specimens properly. ix. Secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed. x. Controls the general “tone” of the operating room. xi. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, anesthesia, management and visitors.

d. To perform the tasks of the “scrub” role.

i. Scrub, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques. ii. Sets up operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies. iii. Arranges instruments according to routine for a given procedure. iv. Handles instruments correctly and checks for cleanliness, sterility and proper working condition. v. Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure. vi. Performs clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties.

e. To function efficiently as a member of surgical team.

i. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, working relations, initiative, training needs). ii. Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed. iii. Assists in stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies. iv. Reports to management needed repairs or maintenance of equipment or building. v. Observes and communicates the need for new or different items in the department. vi. Observes the use and handling of supplies to decrease waste, mishandling, or incorrect use. vii. Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.

f. Assists in the provision and control of supplies and equipment needed for optimal operation of Operating Room.

i. Assists Nurse Manager in control of inventory, drugs, supplies, and Equipment.

c. Assists Nurse Manager with administrative duties to ensure proper functioning of Operating Room.

i. Assists in formation and evaluation of department philosophy, objectives, procedures, and policies. ii. Provides input for performance evaluations on all department employees at the request of the Nurse Manager. iii. Reports changes of any type to Nurse Manager. iv. Monitors and responds to physician, patient, and staff complaints. v. . Monitors and acts to enhance physician, patient, and staff satisfaction.

  1. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

It is necessary to perform some overtime beyond regularly scheduled work hours to meet the needs of the caseload and maintain other responsibilities. Because of the nature of procedures in the O.R. and patient care issues this job can be stressful and hectic. It is a position of responsibility and accountability.

  3. Daily use of surgical instrumentation and equipment.

  4. Daily use of chemicals such as cleaners and Formalin.

  5. Daily use of medical supplies, equipment and materials.

  6. Involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Appropriate protective measures are required.

  7. Requires extensive mobility, walking, sitting and standing.

  8. Requires pushing, pulling, lifting, turning and assisting patients.

  9. Requires lifting of equipment.

  10. Must be able to analyze, problem solve and make decisions quickly and calmly.

  11. Must be able to work independently as well as within a team.

  12. Must be objective in view of employees and department processes.

  13. Must have excellent interpersonal relations and communication skills as well as organizational skills.

  14. Must present and maintain professional image and leadership qualities.

  15. Duties require tact, empathy, open-mindedness, and assertiveness.

Qualifications:
PRESCHOOL TEACHER ASSISTANT REQUIRED SKILLS & EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED required 
  • Childhood Development Associate (CDA) or Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) preferred
  • Previous experience as a Preschool Teacher Assistant or Caregiver preferred
  • High level of flexibility and willingness to work all shifts
  • Must be at least 18 years old
