Purpose of Position
Works under the supervision of the Manager and Surgeon helping to facilitate a safe, effective and orderly operating room in order to maximize the patient's safety.

Description
  • Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions.
  • Scrub arms and hands and assist the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks, and surgical clothing.
  • During surgery passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeon and surgeon's assistants.
  • Holds retractors, cuts sutures, passes needles, supplies and instruments.
  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
  • Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Utilizes preference cards to ensure appropriate instrumentation and equipment
  • Assists in transporting patients to the Operating Room and helps position patients on the Operating Room table.
  • Understands and uses the appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments.
  • May operate sterilizers, adjust lights, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment.
  • Under the direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse, accurately and safely prepares and labels medications during the "surgical procedure."
  • Assists in transferring patients to the recovery area.
  • May assist in turnover and restocking the operating room for the next surgical procedure.
  • Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required.

Qualifications
• Ability to read, write and communicate in English
• Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technologist/Surgical Technologist program
• BLS Certification required within 3 months of entering position
  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
a. Certified by an entity accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and which is also recognized by both the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists and must maintain certification
b. Must obtain National Certification within 12 months of graduation and maintain certification
c. Have been employed as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013
d. Have successfully completed a training program for Surgical Technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service which has been deemed appropriate by the commissioner and become certified within one year of start date and maintain certification
