The Associate Director serves as the attending Veterinarian and has responsibility for all animals used in research and teaching in the Animal Care Facility (ACF) at Meharry Medical College. As a key member of the ACF's leadership team, the Associate Director is responsible for the highest standards of animal care, welfare, regulatory compliance, education, training and customer service. This position provides or delegates clinical care and preventative medicine for lab animal species and interphases with the laboratory animal facility management, supports the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities and animal use and compliance issues. The position holder provides teaching and guidance to graduate students and research personnel on the various aspects on the use laboratory animals in research. As a member of the Office for Research and Innovation's leadership team, fosters a culture of collaboration, creativity, and excellence in helping grow the research enterprise. This person will work closely with the ACF staff and senior leadership, faculty and students to ensure that the ACF provides excellent customer support and services and is responsive to the needs of the Meharry research community.

Daily Operations

  • Clinical veterinarian: Manages the ACF's veterinary program and ensures the most effective operations of the unit through program development and planning. Coordinates, and controls work and procedures and provides advice/consultation to staff regarding veterinary problems. Coordinates animal use assignments within the colony animals. Provides consultation to veterinary technicians on clinical care, medical and surgical care of the laboratory animal species. (the majority of which are rodents). Assigns clinical duties to staff including diagnosis, treatment, and control of diseases and injuries among research animals. Reporting all animal care concerns and becoming involved in the resolution. Direct, implement and oversee health monitoring, developing, and implementing corrective actions for deficiencies and technical oversight of veterinary staff. Support training for research technicians, animal care staff, and research investigators, and work closely with The Director of ACF to provide state of the art veterinary care for research animals.
  • Regulatory: Administer an animal care and use program that is in regulatory compliance with the USDA, OLAW, and AAALACi standards. Provide IACUC protocol advice to PIs and research staff Under the guidance of the Director of the ACF and the IACUC, assist in the preparation of the AAALACi Program Description and assists with triennial site visits for continued accreditation. Assists with USDA visits by touring the Veterinary Medical Officer around to animal housing and research procedural areas, answering any questions they have about what occurs in each place. Serves as a voting member of the IACUC and Institutional Biosafety Committee. Collaborates with the IACUC to create/review/revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or Guidance documents related to animal care and use. Provides veterinary review of IACUC protocols to ensure conformance to accepted veterinary practices and regulations.
  • Administrative: Works in collaboration with the Director of the ACF and the Facility Manager approving bills and invoices and reviewing recovery information provided .Prepares the AAALACi Program Description and assists with triennial site visits for continued accreditation. Prepares for and participates in institutional site visits by external oversight organizations. Works collaboratively with safety offices (Biosafety, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, and Radiation Safety), and Campus Operations. Serves as one of the point of contact for dealing with violations and facility security. Informs and advises university leadership regarding issues and policies pertaining to animal care, use, and welfare.
  • Training and Scholarly activities: Conducts formal and informal training of animal care and research staff and; colony health monitoring (particularly rodents); compliance activities; design when needed and implementation of standard operating procedures for the animal care and use program; and participation in collaborative research and/or other scholarly activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal research.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to generate training presentations, media, and content that promotes and advances lab animal research at Meharry.
  • Knowledge of and willing to learn applicable federal regulations, standards and guidelines for all vertebrate animals used in teaching, research and service, as well as applicable AAALACi accreditation standards
  • Ability to establish working relationships and collaborative partnerships with researchers.
  • Knowledgeable of veterinary standards and generally accepted best practices in research
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and diverse environment required.
  • Ability to partner effectively with investigators who have different interpersonal styles and work in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage competing priorities while consistently delivering results in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated skills using Microsoft Office software and general business applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, Office365, etc..) and Adobe.
  • Ability to adhere to all federal, state, and Meharry regulations and technical guidelines on research and sponsored programs, confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism.
PREFERRED
  • Experience in all aspects of animal care and use programs, including personnel supervision and budget management.
  • The ACF is operational 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Weekend and holiday work on call is required of this position.
  • Familiarity and/or experience using Workday
Required Education and Experience
  • Veterinary Degree (DVM or VMD) from a US accredited veterinary program or foreign veterinary program with requirements met for US state licensure
  • Ability to gain a Tennessee DVM license or commitment to obtain with 120 days of an offer.
