Description

Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a critical member of the executive team. The CFO is responsible for Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver (BGCMD) overall financial management and sets a strategic vision to ensure the organization is financially sustainable. Sophisticated forecasting, strategic planning and executive management of the department are essential for success in this position.

The CFO will be a leader in the truest sense: visionary, a builder, innovator, and focused on results to enhance and optimize BGCMD's operations. The CFO will excel at balancing patience with urgency given the demands of this multi-faceted role. The CFO must be an effective collaborator with a wide variety of constituents.

Specifically, the CFO will be responsible for managing the following critical areas:

Executive Leadership
  • Serve as a critical member of BGCMD's executive team. Collaborate across the executive team (CEO, COO, CDO, and CHRO) to facilitate and achieve the organization's vision, mission, and strategic goals. Provide cultural leadership by modeling the values and priorities of the organization.
  • Establish credibility throughout the organization and with the Board as an effective developer and implementer of solutions to business challenges. Work with the Board of Directors to ensure the realization of financial goals.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to Audit & Finance and Investment Committees.
Financial Leadership
  • Provide strategic management of overall financial operations including the following:
    • Accounting, Reporting, Budgeting, Forecasting, Financial analysis, Treasury management, Investment oversight, Banking relationships, Tax and regulatory filings, Internal controls, Annual audits, Property and asset management, Insurance and risk management, Contract review and oversight
  • Provide oversight and direction that drive accountability and excellence in the fiscal management of BGCMD operations.
  • Serves as a critical contributor to align BGCMD's operations and services with our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy and initiatives.
  • Lead strategic analysis of departmental processes and procedures (including accounts payable, grant reporting, accounts receivable, month-end close, and financial statement preparation) that allow for continuous assessment of the design of transaction flow and overall efficiency and modernization of the department.
  • Lead continuous adaptation of accounting practices and procedures into a modern accounting SaaS application (NetSuite).
  • Lead in the consistent adherence to well-designed internal controls and financial risk management practices that promote stewardship and proactively protect the organization's financial assets.
  • Identify and address potential financial risks to BGCMD and develop an approach that facilitates annual enterprise risk management planning.
  • Optimize the handling of treasury relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position and improvement of return on investments.
  • Develop a process for approval and tracking of capital expenditures that includes analysis of return on investment.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of budgets and budget-to-actual reports to provide relevant information to decision makers, including reforecasting on a periodic basis (e.g., quarterly), or if an unusual / unexpected event occurs (e.g., receipt of unexpected funding).
  • Utilize financial data to challenge the organization and contribute to operational decision making.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of forecasting tools to allow for appropriate financial strategic planning and decision making.
  • Lead the oversight of grants accounting, including obtaining and preparing financial reports required to comply with specified grant requirements.
  • Provide strategic leadership to aid data-driven decision making (i.e. evaluation of potential alliances, acquisitions and/or mergers, and investments).
  • Be an advisor from the financial perspective on contractual agreements.
  • Lead and serve as the primary contact on compliance-related projects such as the annual financial statement audit, the annual 401K audit, tax compliance, and compliance requirements related to the fundraising efforts (e.g., the raffle, gala, etc.).
Team - Performance & Development
  • Develop a first-rate team through employee selection, mentoring, training and development.
  • Provide support, coaching and feedback, supervision, and guidance to direct and indirect reports.
  • Manage team performance with clear performance objectives and enforcement of excellent internal controls.
  • Establish and continuously evaluate the department's performance metrics, team structure, and annual plans for continuous improvement.
  • Provide team members with professional and personal growth through ongoing talent management practices, including leadership development, skill development, and position-specific articles/books/training.
  • Build and maintain culture of service for Finance team with all BGCMD constituents.
The CFO must possess the following skills:
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong working relationships and influence multiple stakeholders through an overall spirit of collaboration.
  • Strategic vision that will help BGCMD's executive leadership team and the Board of Directors to develop innovative partnerships and strengthen existing partnerships.
  • Superb analytical thinking and decision-making abilities; the CFO will lead and contribute to the organization's analytical approach to decision-making and the ongoing development and refinement of tools for assessing the organization's financial performance and selecting the appropriate benchmark and formative assessments for collecting and analyzing data.
  • Excellent project management skills, which, in partnership with the Board of Directors and executive team, will drive the development and implementation of multi-year strategic and financial plans for the organization's effective and efficient management.
Requirements

The CFO is also required to have the following:
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, preferred advanced degree in accounting, tax, finance, or business administration. Preferred active CPA license in the state of Colorado, or ability to transfer an active CPA license to Colorado.
  • A minimum of 10 years of accounting and finance experience, with a preferred 5 years of experience in a leadership role in a large nonprofit organization.
  • Expert level skills and experience in financial analysis and budgeting.
  • Advanced experience with systems administration and SaaS accounting platforms, preferred experience with NetSuite and VENA.
  • Excellent time management and planning skills to manage the daily finance function and strategic planning and implementation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Physical requirements and work environment

The successful candidate must be able to work closely with others in an office environment, and use a variety of office equipment including computer, telephone, and/or other equipment. They may be required to lift supplies, materials, and collateral materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
