JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Technology Director
Location: District Office
Direct Supervisor: Superintendent

Primary Function:

To develop, maintain, and manage the technology/media systems and services of the school district.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in computer education, instructional technology or equivalent education degree with experience in a school setting and three years of information technology

  • Prior experience elementary school district experience preferred

  • Ability to provide instruction to elementary students

  • Ability to provide instruction to teachers

  • Ability to provide instruction to community stakeholders when needed

  • Ability to abide by and enforce school district policies, administrative rules, regulations and directives

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills necessary; ability to address the school community and public

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to develop team performance

  • Demonstrates ethical behavior

  • Holds and communicates a clear vision for success

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, administrators, other district support staff, teachers, and the general public

Job Goal:

The Director of Technology provides educational technology throughout the district including curriculum development, instructional programming for students and staff, network and database administration, and overall system management. This position also ensures appropriate training for District employees and students.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Work with the director of curriculum to develop Technology Curriculum that is aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards

  • Provide appropriate instruction when needed to k-8 elementary students

  • Provide appropriate instruction when needed to teaching staff

  • Plan, procure, and distribute end-user hardware, software, and online systems which support the district's instructional, administrative and operational goals

  • Assure technology/network tasks are appropriately prioritized and scheduled to minimize conflict with the instructional day and the school calendar

  • Recommend the district's technology budget

  • Development/integration of the District website according to identified communication and instructional needs of the district

  • Oversee educational and instructional professional development; coordinate staff development activities to promote effective use of available instructional/administrative technology curriculum

  • Oversee the student information system and District business functions

  • Serve as project manager for district technology curriculum and initiatives

  • Implement the district's long-range instructional instructional technology plan for all locations within the district

  • Oversee the implementation and evaluation of the district's instructional technology plan

  • Support instructional needs and enhance technology integration in the classroom; assist in the evaluation and selection of instructional software

  • Adhere to best practice in the development of policy, procedures and applications of technology in the district

  • Assists professional staff in integrating the use of computers and related technologies into the curriculum

  • Oversees the District's student database and seeks training for staff member

  • Maintains district website and instructs teachers on the possibilities for use of district website as an instructional tool

  • Seeks and receives State and competitive technology grants for the district

  • Provides district-wide technical support of computer systems, networks, and related equipment

  • Assists in reviewing computer hardware and software needs for the District's instructional and administrative programs

  • Develops and provides staff development for information systems

  • Develops data collections and reporting methods as required by the administration

  • Reviews hardware and software programs, troubleshoots, and implements solutions

  • Supervises technology staff for all networked educational and administrative systems

  • Provides guidance and recommendations in the purchase of technology equipment and programs

  • Maintains an inventory of technology hardware and software

  • Documents and maintains a procedural manual of administrative procedures applied to software

  • Participates in meetings with teacher teams concerning technology

  • Seeks out and submits applications for available grant funds related to technology

  • Coordinates with other administrators in any overlapping areas

  • Aligns to the Illinois Learning Standards for educational technology

Instructional:

  • Knowledge of Pedagogy

  • Knowledge of elementary teaching and learning

  • Knowledge of the Illinois Learning Standards

  • Experience as a teacher

  • Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school.

  • Makes recommendations concerning the school's technology instruction

  • Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program

  • Programs instructional classes within established guides to meet student needs

  • Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of the instructional curriculum

  • Supervises the instructional technology program to enhance individual student technology education and development

Technical:

  • Evaluate contracts for information support and develop longevity for tying systems together (This includes overall effectiveness for single input of data by end-users and rolling information effectively between systems)

  • Evaluate all communication systems for cost effective strategies and compliance with all 9-1-1 regulations, including mass calling communication tools for district

  • Evaluate all backup and operating processes for district guidelines on retention and recovery

  • Develop and maintain a disaster recovery plan in accordance with district policy and acceptable downtime

  • Have working knowledge of the following technical areas for evaluation and decision-making:

    • Network security risks

    • E-mail profiles and policy restrictions with messaging system architecture o Print queue and print server operations

    • Database system maintenance and licensing

    • Electronic file management concepts

    • WEB software and WEB design

    • Internet protocol and client server communication

    • Domain Name Services

    • Network infrastructure hardware, security, and traffic control

    • Account setup for end-users

    • Void, audio, and video options for technically current networks

  • Develop plans for replacement, maintenance, and ongoing support of all hardware and software

  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Handle confidential information discretely and professionally

  • Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to Microsoft Office and Outlook

  • Ability to use discretion and exercise sound judgment

  • Critical thinker and problem solver

  • Effective oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to exercise appropriate initiative and work independently

  • Good organizational and time management skills

Evaluation: The Superintendent reviews performance annually.

Terms of Employment: Twelve-Month Year. Salary and work year established by the Board of Education.
