- Title: Advanced Tax Service Specialist
- Location: Remote
- Hourly Rate: Market Rate
Functional Responsibilities:
- Apply subject matter expertise in researching relevant tax statutes, regulations, case law, accounting principles, financial reporting standards, or other guidance governing the financial services industry, and apply to client fact patterns to determine appropriate treatment, income tax positions, compliance, and opportunities for claims for credit or refund.
- Responsible for complex tasks related to identifying, documenting, reporting, and sustaining various tax credits (e.g., low income housing, research and development, etc.) as well as IRC section 174 research and experimental expenditures.
- Engage in discussions with client technical personnel to identify fact patterns useful to determine the eligibility of potential research tax credits and associated investments and activities (e.g., permitted purpose, technological uncertainty, process of experimentation, and technological principles).
- Analyze large data sets of payroll, contractor, and project related information to isolate potentially qualifying costs for research tax credit claims.
- Evaluate software development activities for purposes of applying complex regulations regarding software development and internal-use software-based research tax credit claims.
- Apply case law to applicable fact patterns and review contracts to evaluate risk and determine appropriate treatment of potentially qualifying activities and costs.
- Identify, organize, prepare, and review documentation to demonstrate how software development activities meet four-part test (and high threshold of innovation test, as applicable) to be qualified for research tax credit.
- Document methodology, statutes, and client fact patterns including, but not limited to, describing software development activities for research tax credits.
- Lead the integration of cross-functional teams, such as tax, finance, engineering, product, and legal, to gather necessary information and ensure accurate documentation.
- Provides audit and/or tax controversy support (e.g., responding to document requests, engaging with auditors, appeals and in litigation in conjunction with FDIC Legal Division and/or outside legal counsel contracted by FDIC) in the event that complex tax issues (e.g., research tax credits and IRC section 174 research and experimental expenditures) are examined/audited/denied by taxing authorities.
- At least five (5) years of complex tax consulting and compliance experience with a public accounting firm and/or financial institution.
- Subject matter expert on complex tax issues (e.g., research tax credits, software development activities, etc.), and in-depth experience evaluating tax statutes, regulations, and/or case law and other guidance specific to the taxation of receiverships and/or financial institutions.
- Highly skilled in relevant area of expertise (e.g., tax compliance for C Corps, S Corps, partnerships, payroll, withholding, information tax reporting; identifying, documenting, and sustaining research credits and IRC section 174 research and experimental expenditures).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Master's Degree in Taxation or licensed Certified Public Accountant or attorney specializing in tax law.
