Position Summary
The Chair of theDepartment of Psychiatry shall provide leadership of the Department, includingall educational, clinical, research, and outreach activities of the Department.The Chair will represent the Department in College leadership to the Universityof Illinois Chicago College of Medicine and with the Community.
The Chair willoversee the education of our medical students in the pre-clinical and clinicalphases of their education primarily through guidance of the clerkship directorand recruitment of community-based faculty to participate in medical education.The Chair will oversee the research activities of the community-baseddepartment. The Chair will provide leadership in developing new programs toassure quality in meeting the clinical and educational commitments of theDepartment. The Chair will recruit, advise,and develop high-quality faculty and encourage research, curriculum development,and other scholarly activities. The Chair will interact with other departmentheads/chairs to facilitate inter-departmental programs involving other clinicaldisciplines and other health professions within this College andinternationally. The Chair will have ongoing clinical responsibilities at apartner healthcare institution.
Duties & Responsibilities
- In administering the academic activities of the Department, the Chair will be responsible to the Regional Dean of the College of Medicine at Rockford. For activities based at a partner healthcare facility, the Chair will be responsible to the Chief Medical Officer of the health system.
- The full-time position is structured so that the candidate will maintain and build a clinical practice at one of the partner institutions in a part-time role and will develop clinical teaching for the medical students at that site.
- The Chair shall be responsible for the Departmental budgets and, in consultation with appropriate committees, be responsible for all Departmental staff, the allocation of facilities, the care and distribution of Departmental property, and the expenditure of Departmental funds.
- The Chair shall annually consult with and counsel each faculty member of the Department regarding the nature and scope of his/her work, academic and professional development, and career goals.
- The Chair shall serve as a member of committees of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, the College of Medicine, the University, and committees in the community, as appropriate.
- The Chair shall work with other disciplines and units in the promotion of interprofessional education as well as community-based education, research, and service to effectively serve the local community.
- The Chair will work with community and state-wide psychiatrists to participate in the clinical education and training of medical students.
- TheChair must qualify for appointment to the medical staff of partnering healthsystem(s).
- M.D./D.O. degree with Board Certificationin Psychiatry (Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, GeriatricPsychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry, etc.)
- Licensed or license-eligible to practicemedicine in Illinois and must meet the criteria for faculty appointment at theUniversity. Candidate must also be ableto maintain privileges at a partner healthcare institution.
- The Chair must be experienced inclinical teaching and/or administration at either the undergraduate or graduatelevel.
The Chair must have demonstratedexperience, skills and knowledge in health careadministration. - Experience in a clinical, research or academic leadership role.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education.
- The Chair should beexperienced in developing and implementing curricula for medical students orgraduate medical education.
- The Chair should bean active participant and representative of the College of Medicine in theappropriate scientific and educational organizations of peers and colleaguesdedicated to advancing Psychiatry and medical education.
- The Chair should havea visible presence in the community, representing the Department and theCollege as a resource to the public media, interest groups and in publicservice.
- The Chair will have ademonstrated history of leadership in research endeavors, resulting inpublications in refereed journals with a potential to attract extramuralfunding.
