Job Description
Structural Fitters are responsible for preparing structural metal products for welding. Responsible for fabricating, assembling, and installing structural steel products such as beams, braces, pipes and plates. Other duties include, but not limited to:

  • Align and fit parts according to specifications using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
  • Move parts into position using hoist or crane.
  • Tack-weld fitted parts together.
  • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material requirements and task sequences.
  • Design and construct templates and fixtures using hand tools.
  • Hammer, chip and grind work pieces to cut, bend and straighten metal.
  • Straighten warped or bent parts using sledges, hand torches or straightening presses.
  • Heat work pieces to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.
  • Install boilers, containers and other structures.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders and cutting torches.
  • Smooth work piece edges, and fix taps, tubes and valves.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of fitter work-related experience and/or training is required.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Training from a vocational school or previous employer in the use of application tools and in the application techniques, preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a written and/or practical skills test.
  • Must be able to read blueprints, section and plan drawings and weld symbols.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Experience working in a physically demanding environment.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and good safety practices.
  • Able to carry up to 50lbs.
  • Able to operate a wide range of tools, including but not limited to, arc welding equipment, oxy-fuel cutting equipment, angle grinder, die grinder, plasma table, overhead crane, jib crane, calipers and micrometers.
  • Able to work at heights up to 15 feet on various types of platforms and lifts for various lengths of time.
  • Able to enter and exit a confined space for various amounts of time.
