The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of MRI Technician. The primary purpose of this position is to perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures on various veterinary species patients for interpretation by veterinary radiologists using high-field MRI equipment. The MRI Technician is responsible for completing high quality MRI studies with little supervision, equipment maintenance, setting imaging protocols, ensuring safety of patients, people, and equipment, and assisting with research studies as applicable. The technician is responsible for training others in MRI safety, principles, proper patient positioning, and image acquisition. The MRI technician assists anesthesia personnel with patient preparation for MRI procedures and communicates relevant information promptly to radiologists and staff.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Performs magnetic resonance imaging procedures for interpretation by veterinary radiologists.
  • Completes any image reconstructions.
  • Sends studies to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
  • Provides daily organization of MRI procedures.
  • Reviews requests submitted by clinicians or students for accuracy.
  • Assists anesthesia personnel with intubation, IV, premeds and proper restraint of MRI patients when needed.
  • Communicates regularly with radiologists and staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for MRI safety during and outside of scanning procedures.
  • Performs daily quality assurance and calibration on MRI equipment.
  • Notifies service engineers if any errors occur.
  • Notifies CVM of any equipment unavailability.
  • Improves/sets MRI sequences and protocols for clinical and research applications as applicable.
  • Maintains MRI scan and control room, including ordering and stocking of supplies.
  • Teaches MRI safety, basic principles, and image acquisition.
  • Ensures radiology residents learn to operate the MRI scanner.
  • Assists in other areas of radiology as needed, performing a wide array of radiographic/imaging procedures in various animal species.
  • Ensures completed studies have been sent to PACS, that correct charges are entered, and other necessary forms are completed.
  • Acquires familiarity with other pertinent computer programs such as the medical records system.
  • Completes and maintains necessary training and certification (IACUC, radiation safety, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associates degree from an American Medical Association-approved school of Radiologic Technology.
  • Must obtain Certification in Radiology and MRI within first year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an American Medical Association-approved school of Radiologic Technology.
  • 2+ years of MRI Experience with 1.5 Tesla MRI or greater field strength.
  • Training on Siemens MRI.
  • Certification in Radiology and MRI.


The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.
