This position is focused on leading the research and development of new thermal control technologies for Space Force spacecraft. This technology development includes thermal analysis and thermal lab work. Examples of technology development categories include heat pipes, fluid components, thermo-optical coatings, and insulation.

Duties include:
  • Investigating future Space Force thermal technology needs, management of thermal work by on-site and off-site contractors and a team of government engineers, writing and reviewing research proposals, contributing to the broader spacecraft thermal community, providing support to other research programs within AFRL and across the US government, and opportunities to contribute to the entire satellite lifecycle - from R&D through design, build, test, launch, and flight.
  • The Spacecraft Thermal Management R&D Lead Engineer would lead planning, organizing and conducting science and technology activities including basic research, applied research and advanced technology development of thermal management systems and components for use in future space missions. Coordinate and collaborate with government, industry, and academic professionals to understand requirements and to seamlessly conduct theoretical and experimental research, troubleshooting technical issues, and support the R&D mission to satisfy these requirements.
  • Conducts failure analysis in the Thermal Laboratory to enhance the laboratory capabilities, thereby enhancing the contributions to USSF missions. Uses analytical skills to plan and execute R&D on thermal management system components and concepts to satisfy ever-increasing mission requirements. Communicates progress to audiences both verbally at technical conferences and in writing for high-impact scientific journals. Participates in collaborations with internal and external government, industry and academic organizations.
  • Provides documentation of research results. Leads, or contributes to drafts and revisions of technical reports, papers, articles, presentations and summaries on R&D activities and related efforts. Prepares and presents briefings on R&D activities and related efforts. Reviews reports, summaries and presentations prepared by the Thermal team for accuracy of assigned technology efforts. Fundamentally, the role consists of defining a vision for the future of spacecraft thermal control and taking action to realize it.
  • Conducts research on materials for spacecraft thermal management, thermal management of all size scales (component, unit, subsystem, spacecraft) and all subsystems of spacecraft, studies design and fabrication of thermal management systems and components, provides benchmarking thermal management system, component, and material performance information, optimizes cost, size, weight and power characteristics of thermal management systems and components for space systems, and provides thermal management system subject-matter expertise to all AFRL/RV programs and other federal agencies

Required Qualifications
• United States Citizenship
• Must possess a professional engineering bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution in either mechanical or aerospace engineering with a focus on thermal dynamics and fluid dynamics
• 4 or more years of experience in R&D, design, and/or operations of spacecraft thermal control subsystems
• Ability to pass random drug testing; this is a drug testing designated position
• Must be able to obtain Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) Level I (foundational), Critical, Certification in Engineering and Technical Management (N). The selectee will have 24 months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained.
• Self-motivation, a creative attitude, and a passion for engineering
• Ability to cast a vision for the future of spacecraft thermal control and lead a small team

Desired Qualifications
• Advanced degree (MS) in an engineering field related to thermal and fluids (materials, aerospace, etc.)
• 8 or more years of experience in R&D, design, and/or operations of spacecraft thermal control subsystems, or a combination of these experiences
