Overview

Labor Category/Position Title: MRI Technologist

Overall Position Summary and Objectives:

Provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the National Institute on Aging. The primary
objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services.

Pay Rate: $36.20/hour - $47.20/hour (depending on years of experience)

Schedule: Part-Time, 16 hours/week, Shifts will be Monday-Friday, no weekends

Location:

NIA - Baltimore, MD

Minimum Education: MRI Technology

Statement of Work Details:
  • Operate the NIA 3T MRI scanner doing structural and functional imaging and MR spectroscopy studies, which are part of NIA clinical research studies.
  • Work in close collaboration with NIA clinical and basic research scientists investigating age-related changes in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neuro-cognitive and other body systems.
  • Coordinate the following:
    • a. Ensure that all research participants, patients and visitors to the NIA 3T MRI Facility are free of metal
      objects and other exclusion criteria (outlined in the NIA 3T MRI safety checklist) before entering the magnet room; adhere to safety
      precautions and procedures that apply to the NIA 3T MRI Facility.
    • b. Transfer, position and instruct research participants and/or patients
      regarding the procedure to obtain the desired radiographic results as specified by the research study and its responsible investigators.
    • c. Ensure the participant's or patient's safety and comfort throughout scanning using the patient monitoring system effectively.
    • d. Evacuate participants, patients, staff and visitors in case of emergency; alert the appropriate hospital and NIA emergency response teams in case of emergency.
    • e. Set up all MR-specific equipment and matrix camera, coils and display equipment for functional imaging.
    • f. Operate the MRI console during scanning, including selecting proper imaging sequences; operate various peripheral hardware as needed for effective image and data acquisition.
    • g. Recognize equipment malfunctions and notify appropriate personnel in case of malfunctions.
    • h. Log all scans performed in the appropriate logbook; enter participant/patient data at start of scanning and monitor data acquisition
      during scanning.
    • i. Perform post-processing steps to acquired images and data as specified by the study investigators.
    • j. Transfer both raw and post-processed images and data to PACS and other specified databases and/or secure storage media (encrypted USB and/or
      external hard drives and/or DVDs), where they can be stored safely.
    • k. Ensure that scans that require clinical reading are being transferred to PACS; following up with responsible radiologist to ensure that a signed radiology report is available within 48 hours; upload the signed radiology report to the PACS.
    • l. Assist in scheduling of NIA research participants for MRI scans to achieve a smooth flow and optimal utilization of the Facility; assist in identifying times when the scanner can be used by Harbor Hospital for clinical studies.
    • m. Ensure prompt and proper disposal of supplies and materials (including hazardous and infectious waste) according to prescribed safety precautions and regulations.
    • n. Participate in meetings, keep abreast of the latest techniques and pursue required training.
    • o. Work in conjunction with other clinical staff, research scientists and administrative staff in maintaining the smooth function of the facility.

  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to the status of all MR-specific equipment and matrix camera, coils and display equipment for functional imaging.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to equipment malfunctions and the steps taken to address them, scheduling and/or performing routine equipment maintenance functions.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to the logging scans in the appropriate log book.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to the state of raw and post-processed images and data and their transfer to PACS and other specified databases and/or secure storage media (secure external hard drives and/or DVDs).
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to the transfer to the PACS of scans that require clinical reading; follow-up with the radiologist to ensure that signed radiology reports are available within 48 hours and; upload the signed radiology report to the PACS.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to sign-out from/to PRN technologists and/or Harbor Hospital technologists operating the scanner for clinical studies, including the status and integrity of previously acquired data, hardware and other equipment, software and physical environment of the Facility.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to creating and updating a schedule for the Facility that integrates NIA research studies and clinical studies performed by Harbor Hospital technologists.
  • - Ad-Hoc Work products and documents related to maintaining stock of all required supplies and materials, and placement of orders for supplies and materials.

Qualifications

Certifications and Licenses:
  • Master's degree in a science related discipline.
  • Licensed in Maryland as MRI technologist
Field of Study:
  • Biology
  • Medical Technologies Technicians

  • MS Office Suite
Skills:
  • Certification by the ARRT
  • Licensed by the State of Maryland.
