Description

Samford University seeks a grants accounting professional to support its Office of Research in the role of Grants Accountant. The position will be responsible for post award grant accounting in the preparation, maintenance, and review of sponsored awards for the University's growing portfolio of sponsored programs. The responsibilities involve maintaining accounts for federal, state, local, and private grants and contracts awarded to the institution. This position will work to prepare and monitor account revisions, support schedules, reconciliations and source documents as required for university and sponsoring agency compliance. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Grants and Contracts and performs duties under the direction of the same as needed. Excellent for entry-level accountants, interested in gaining experience.

This position supports the post-award grant administration and related responsibilities and duties as assigned. It is funded for 1 year at a time and will be funded for up to 2 years.
Job Duties

  • Establish new grant awards and budgets in financial management system and assist with grant implementation meetings
  • Manage Pcard assigned to awards
  • Prepare journal and budget entries to correct and reconcile awards
  • Review and approve expenditures and cost transfers for contract, grant or cost share accounts for allowability and allocability.
  • Maintain effort schedules, perform labor distribution changes, monitor effort reports
  • Perform necessary reconciliations, entries and processes to close out awards
  • Prepare other entries required for fiscal year end
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports on grants for internal management purposes
  • Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports and billing as required by granting agencies/organizations
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analysis in response to requests or to provide support to administrators/faculty/staff.
  • Maintain grant documents as required for compliance and retention purposes
  • Ensure compliance with IRS regulations, cost accounting standards, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent federal regulations and circulars as related to grants.
  • Support faculty and staff in use of the university's financial management systems and other reporting systems in post-award management process.
  • Engage with faculty and staff on regular basis to review grant funds and address concerns
  • Support and assist with institution-wide compliance program, subrecipient monitoring, and other fiscal compliance as needed/identified.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with financial software
  • Strong decision making and analysis skills
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Sitting (Example: Remaining in a seated position for up to 6 hours per day.)
    • Visual Requirements (viewing monitors)
    • Hearing Requirements (meetings/presentations /discussons)
    • Keyboarding requirements (daily computer usage)
    • Work Schedule : Monday thru Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a university sponsored research setting, or higher education, governmental, or public accounting.
  • A working knowledge of the federal administrative requirements and cost principles contained in the Uniform Guidance,?CAS,?GAAP, and?GAAS applicable to higher education.
  • Experience using Banner Grants.
