Description

The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) is seeking a Computer & Controls Research Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of connected systems engineering solutions. The successful candidate is a thought leader adept at synthesizing manufacturing experience with extensive systems engineering and digital engineering knowledge in support of CCAM's technology roadmap in alignment with CCAM member needs. The goal of the CCAM Digital Systems Team is to provide actionable intelligence to the manufacturing processes within its construct.

The Computer & Controls Research Engineer will play an instrumental role in building, leading, and supporting multi- disciplinary project teams to develop, test, and deliver solutions to industry customer partners that solve key manufacturing challenges. At CCAM, our Digital Systems Team work directly with subject matter experts and process owners within manufacturing companies, as well as in government and academia, to understand their problems and determine if and how digital technologies can be used to solve them. This includes problem assessment & technology evaluation, technology development & testing, application development and testing, automation & integration, and more. Our team members work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment on multiple projects at a time, collaborating with contributors from different disciplines, teams, companies, and universities.

Examples of day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Determine system and stakeholder requirements and communicate with a team of software developers, data scientists, hardware engineers, and process subject matter experts for manufacturing-based process (environmental, motion control, automation, etc.)
  • Function as a subject matter expert in system engineering specialties, such as motion control system architecture (drives, sensors, PLCs, etc.), data management, communication interfaces (HMIs, dashboards, etc.), digital twining, etc., to CCAM members and engineering teams.
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of connected systems of engineering solutions.
  • Engage with the IIoT community globally and locally to understand current innovations, emerging technologies, and relevant standards.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar and 5 years of relevant industrial experience.
  • Experience designing and/or implementing standards-based systems for manufacturing automation with demonstrable added value.
  • Demonstrable experience with motion control solutions utilizing PLCs such as, Siemens, Allen- Bradley, Delta Tau, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience programming a manufacturing system solution in more than two of the following languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, C/C++/C#, etc.
  • This position requires access to technology or intellectual property that is subject to export control requirements. Candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
Preferred Skills:
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or similar and at least 10 years of relevant industrial experience.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing automation standards like ISA-95, ISA-99, IEC 62443, and Industry 4.0 related standards.
  • Demonstrable Experience with Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) related technologies such as using MQTT, AMQP, OPC, UA, DDS, or Kafka.
  • Experience with systems of systems design and system architecture solving a production issue and demonstrated manufacturing value.
  • Experience with cloud-based data applications and data systems such as AWS, Azure, MindSphere, Predix, or C3.
  • Familiarity with database development and/or administration, including familiarity with both non-relational databases (such as MongoDB) as well as relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Highly proficient in programming in more than three of the following languages: Python, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, C/C++/C#.
