Overview

As an ICU Nurse at CHI Saint Joseph Health,  you’ll monitor patients who are critically ill and unstable following extensive injury, surgery, or life-threatening disease. You’ll never have the same day twice as your patients’ needs evolve but you'll always begin each shift by taking report from a nursing teammate before making your rounds. You’ll provide continued care and perform procedures as detailed in the care plan. 

To thrive in this role, you’ll heavily depend on your ability to multitask and react. You’ll clinically care for your patients- remaining focused and attentive as you continuously monitor your patients throughout your shift. You also serve as their advocate- supporting their best interests when they cannot. Your sound judgment during an emergency and rapid response are impressive, putting you on the radar for advancement.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Assess, plan and implement compassionate nursing care while ensuring patient comfort
  • Anticipate, identify, and respond to informational and emotional needs of patients and families
  • Guide and direct healthcare personnel (i.e., Patient Care Technicians) in caring for patients
  • Maintain knowledge of equipment setup, maintenance and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices)
  • Utilize safeguards such as IV pump drug library and monitor alarms 
  • Initiate emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury)
  • Assist with patient care duties (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene)

Responsibilities

This position is accountable for the daily patient care operations of the assigned department, working under the direction of the Nurse Manager on assigned shifts.  Responsible for daily patient care assignments, maintaining clinical standards of care, maintaining labor productivity and supervision of the patient care environment; supporting the care team.  Supports the activities of the Nurse Manager.  Maintains positive inter- and intra-departmental relationships.  Directs patient throughput activities in the assigned unit. Maintains evidence-based nursing practices to achieve desirable patient outcomes in accordance with the Kentucky Nurse Practice Act.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities Provides direct supervision of personnel practicing on Nursing Units, makes patient care assignments, evaluates assignments, facilitates patient throughout, and directly observes staff performance on their assigned shift. Proactively matches existing resources seeking ways to provide patient care that supports staff and maintains a therapeutic environment. Monitors productivity and assures that staffing and resources are aligned with patient care needs. Communicates personnel related concerns to the Unit Manager. Uses a logical, systematic approach to problems and problem-solving. Facilitates Patient Experience best practices on the unit (hourly rounding, etc.) Maintains Unit Professional standards.  Holds staff accountable for behaviors and attitudes. Maintains confidentiality of information of the department.  Assists in audits and data collection as requested.  Contributes to the efficient operation of the department. Performs direct patient care and accepts an assigned group of patients as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited program
  • Active Registered Nurse Licensure in Kentucky (KY) or eNLC licensure with multistate privileges in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required to obtain within 3 months post hire 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Previous nursing experience in Med/Surg, Telemetry, Cardiac, Emergency, or Critical Care service lines
