Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Technician

POSITION PURPOSE:

Provides nursing care services in accordance with the policies of MHS and directives of the medical staff.

Possess the ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions or directions. Adheres to MHS

Standard Precaution policy and procedure. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Work with

supervisors, other department managers, and medical staff in order to provide the best patient care

possible.

Performs duties involved in cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing supplies and equivalent and makes

deliveries to users as directed. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of supplies and equipment.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment.
  • Uses chemical solution to provide high level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
  • Sterilizes supplies using autoclave.
  • Folds and assembles linens.
  • Stocks supplies in sterile processing, operating room, and minor procedure room.
  • Inventories supply levels.
  • Orders supplies from purchasing.
  • Places supplies received into the supply stock.
  • Bring low inventory levels to the supervisor's attention.
  • Assisted in preparing patients for, during, and after endoscopies and other minor procedures. Cleans
  • and disinfect endoscopic equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections on medical equipment for defects.
  • Maintains positive and effective relationships with other departments and the Medical Staff.
  • Maintains open communication and problem-solving atmosphere with other departments to achieve
  • quality patient care.
  • Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.
  • Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.
  • Be a preceptor to new hires as requested.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:
  • High school graduate: Must have been operating as a surgical technician before 09/2009, have a surgical tech certification, or be an LVN with surgical tech experience willing to complete continuing education every two years.
  • 1-2 years prior work experience preferred. Technical Training, sterile processing/distribution program preferred.
  • BLS is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility, and department/unit specific to the needs of the patient population served as applicable.
