Pharmacy Technician Coordinator

Summary of Essential Functions
  • Must be able to independently complete all duties of a hospital pharmacy technician II.
  • As a member of the pharmacy management team, the coordinator directly supervises pharmacy personnel during daily operations. Recruits, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff.
  • Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels' staff on their performance. This includes routine feedback and coaching as well as annual performance evaluations.
  • Leads by example holding self and others accountable to the organization's behavioral standards and the practice standards of the department.
  • Works with other department coordinators, the pharmacy clinical manager, pharmacy operations manager, and the director of pharmacy to develop, maintain, and improve pharmacy operations. Includes, but is not limited to, staff scheduling, workflow, assigned duties, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
Educational Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • College courses desirable but not required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Licensure and Certifications
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Texas.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of work experience comparable to that gained at the Pharmacy Technician II level
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Pharmacy Technician II
  • Perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision, handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule, ability to set priorities, and make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Must be able to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Hours may be long and irregular, includes evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary.
  • Must be able to set priorities and solve problems.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Must be able to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, psychiatric, obstetric, oncology, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills. Ability to strongly communicate and interact with all levels of professionals, including but not limited to physicians and nursing personnel, managers, various support staff departments, physician offices, in a non-confrontational manner. Must be able to communicate complex regulatory and clinical information in understandable terms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with various System audiences.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, ability to integrate knowledge with job situations.
Physical Requirements
  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard).
  • Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs and cleaning solutions), sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
  • May require lifting and carrying loads greater than 25 pounds.
  • Stooping, kneeling, walking or standing for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to physically operate the equipment used in the job.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to normal or near normal range.
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or walking depending on specific duties.
  • Ability to distinguish between numbers and symbols.
  • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity with substantial movement of wrist and/or fingers.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clinical Role Model - Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical skills and the ability to support others to achieve the delivery of quality care. Functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the pharmacy technician staff. Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of pharmacy care provided by the department in collaboration with the managers & director.
  • Leadership - Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff. Assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the absence of the managers or director.
  • Administrative - Demonstrates excellent skills in planning, organizing, and managing personnel resources in a cost effective and productive manner for the operational area of the pharmacy department. Plays an active role in scheduling and ensuring the needs are met for the department in terms of staffing.
  • Performs duties of a Pharmacy Technician II, as required.
  • Must gain progressively more responsible work experience in specialized pharmaceutical duties such as, but not limited to, billing and informatics, controlled substances and preventing diversion, purchasing, and onboarding new staff members.
  • Provides support during the shift to fill staffing needs and assist with managing coverage for sick calls/leave.
  • Continuously monitors volume/workload, assists with directing staff in managing the workload for optimal patient care and efficiency (making sure 'Take Home scripts' are checked/sent in a timely manner to aid in smooth patient discharge)
  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures, and protocols and within specified time frame. Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas. Prepackages medications in unit of use containers.
  • Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel. Verifies the daily activities of pharmacy technicians. Participates in the performance appraisal of pharmacy support personnel.
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department. Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds. Enters medication orders into pharmacy computer system accurately. Generates reports, restock lists and labels as required.
  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel. Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files in appropriate locations.
  • Precept Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Students, Pharmacists, and Nurses regarding pharmacy-related activities.
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department. Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner. Conducts quality monitors, collects data, and completes documentation, as assigned. Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment and areas clean, neat, and well-organized.
  • Performs all other related tasks/responsibilities as assigned.
