JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Unit Manager the Licensed Vocational Nurse is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment/ instrumentation, and other health care team members she/he may interact with or delegate duties or supervise in the delivery of care based on the scope of practice outlined by the Board of Nursing.
Job Specific:
- Under the direct supervision of an RN, assumes responsibility for quality patient care to assigned patients based on the plan of care and assists with the supervision of tasks, activities, and functions assigned to unlicensed staff members in the delivery of patient care.(EF)
- Participates in professional development of self and staff to enhance patient focused nursing practice, age, and population-specific to the nursing unit.(EF)
- Actively participates in unit's performance improvement initiatives.(EF)
- Performs appropriate components of the functional assessment and ongoing patient data collection with complete and timely documentation.(EF)
- Utilizes appropriate techniques for data collection to make suitable decisions for patient care and treatment within scope of responsibility, training, and practice and keeps the RN informed of changes.(EF)
- Participates in modifying the nursing care plan for assigned patients.(EF)
- Performs nursing interventions with emphasis on patient rights, informed consent, patient confidentially, HIPAA compliance, adaptation of care according to age, cultural and ethical considerations.(EF)
- Focuses on prevention/care of pressure ulcers.(EF)
- Monitors and provides patient needs during the use of restraints on assigned patients.(EF)
- Monitors appropriate pain management and performs interventions.(EF)
- Performs patient care activities; assisting with ADLs, mobilization of patients, drains, dressings, wound care, associated therapeutic devices and nutritional needs.(EF)
- Administers medications according to facility standards and demonstrates safe and accurate administration of medications/control substances.(EF)
- Observes patient progress and changes in patient status to the RN and physician and documents in the medical record.(EF)
- Communicates discharge needs to the RN on a regular basis on assigned patients.(EF)
- Provides and documents patient education provided on assigned patients and/or patient care givers.(EF)
- Accurately records vital signs, intake and output and other physical observations on the appropriate forms.(EF)
- Develops and maintains proficiency in the use of equipment and facilitates maintenance of equipment by completing maintenance requests.(EF)
- Demonstrates Service Excellence Initiatives by presenting a positive first impression; anticipates customer needs, and is actively involved in role of Team Player.(EF)
- Obtains physician orders to meet the needs of the patient(EF).
- Follows universal precautions.(EF)
- Complies with Employee Health requirements for employment.(EF)
- Works in manner that promotes safety, adhering to dress code policy.(EF)
- Knows role in emergency situations and reports unsafe practices to management.(EF)
- Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
- Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital's Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
- Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital's Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
- Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of accredited school of vocational nursing
- 8 hr. Stroke Education (within 90 days from date of hire) annually (except Pediatrics)
- Basic Arrhythmia if working on nursing units with telemetry
- Current license or permit to practice as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas
- BCLS
- *PALS certification required to practice as a pediatric nurse
- All certifications for new hires/new GNs/RNs must be obtained within 12 months of hire)
- Current employees are responsible for maintaining certifications; All certification renewals will be completed prior to the expiration date

As a condition of employment, Citizens Medical Center requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless there is an approved exemption.
