Job Function

Reporting into the Performance Minerals R&D Manager, the Metallurgical R&D Engineer will be based out of our Milwaukee, WI site and will be responsible for development projects for new metallurgical products, product line expertise, and technical customer support.

Responsibilities

  • Work both independently and in collaboration with other engineers, sales representatives, and customers to develop new products for sand casting additives, mold and core refractory coatings, fluxes and other foundry products, and refractory ladle sands for steel making.
  • Perform laboratory work according to prescribed instruction and develop new procedures to support development and scale-up of metallurgical products, as well as raw materials qualification, production support and customer support related projects.
  • Document project work and manage project deadlines. Create reports to summarize current progress, results, and next steps.
  • Become proficient in operation of appropriate RD and manufacturing equipment and test instruments.
  • Identify casting defects, and other failure modes, as requested by customer to troubleshoot product performance and potential new development opportunities.
  • Familiarize yourself with Vibrantz ISO procedures and practice them.
  • Maintain documentation to organize, analyze, and record your work in both electronic and paper format.
  • Perform R&D inventory of raw materials, finished products, and reclaim materials. Properly dispose of unwanted or old documents.
  • Practice good housekeeping, organization, and safety in the laboratories. Identify and use safety labels on product containers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in science or engineering discipline. Materials Science Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering preferred.
  • 1+ years experience in engineering, product development, or manufacturing engineering role.
  • Knowledge of common laboratory safety practices.
Preferred Experience
  • Prior lab experience and experience using personal protective equipment
  • Familiar with metallurgical manufacturing, such as foundry production, steel making, non-ferrous smelting, and/or other metallurgical experience.
  • Chemical handling experience
  • Systematically gather data, communicate in a timely manner and seek input as needed
  • Experience with PowerPoint to plan experiments and record, analyze, and summarize and results
