CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of tasks involving general cleaning and routine repairs and maintenance of buildings and grounds. The primary responsibility of this classification is to provide students and/or staff with a clean, safe, attractive, and efficient place in which to learn and work. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from an assigned administrator and work on a regular basis within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.

Dust and clean classrooms and offices; wash walls, woodwork, and other surfaces; and wash windows and door glass.

Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, and wax floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.

Wash and sanitize sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains, and fixtures.

Replenish paper supplies, soap dispensers, and storage areas.

Empty trash receptacles and dispose of trash.

Routinely inspect buildings and grounds to ensure proper maintenance and safety.

Pick up supplies and equipment as needed.

Perform minor building and custodial equipment maintenance.

Advise Manager, Maintenance and Grounds, of necessary repairs.

Move, arrange, and set up classroom and office equipment, supplies, and furniture.

May maintain exterior grounds, including the mowing and edging of lawns.

May use hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from landscaped areas.

May oversee the work of student assistants.

Maintain security and safety of buildings.

May assist building administrators in working with special groups who use the building during off hours.

May arm and/or disarm intrusion alarm systems.

Respond as necessary to the intrusion and/or farm alarm systems or due to emergency situations.

Attend staff and inservice training meetings.

OTHER DUTIES:
Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Methods, supplies, tools, and equipment used in custodial work.
Methods, supplies, tools, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
Safety regulations and safe work practices.
Proper hygiene practices and procedures.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
Methods of collecting and organizing data and information.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:
Use supplies, tools, and equipment required in custodial work safely and effectively.
Make minor repairs to facilities and equipment.
Operate hand and power tools.
Climb ladders.
As required, return to a worksite outside of normal assigned working hours in response to intrusion and/or fire alarms or due to emergency situations.
Train student assistants, if requested.
Work at any employer work location.
Work a flexible schedule as deemed necessary by administration.
Handle emergencies in case of accident or illness.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Communicate effectively with physically and developmentally disabled children.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Prepare records and reports related to assigned activities.
React with flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs.
Interact effectively with students, parents, staff, and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environment.
The employee may occasionally work in extreme weather conditions and be exposed to noise and fumes from equipment operation.
May be required to drive a vehicle to conduct work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Perform strenuous physical work in lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, moving, and controlling heavy objects, such as furniture or equipment.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Seeing to read a variety of materials.
Reaching overhead and above the shoulders, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties in a safe and effective manner for self and others.

Requirements / Qualifications

The primary responsibility of this classification is to provide students and/or staff with a clean, safe, attractive, and efficient place in which to learn and work. Substitute employees in this classification receive general supervision from an assigned administrator and work on a regular basis within a well-defined framework of policies and procedures.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
One year experience in custodial work is preferred.
The successful candidate must be cleared by the Department of Justice prior to employment as required by law.
