As part of HVAC Cooling, SPX Cooling Technologies is a leader in high quality industrial HVAC equipment used to cool large facilities like hospitals, data centers, and power plants. With cooling towers, fans, and refrigeration units, companies rely on brands like Marley, Recold, and SGS to provide comfort and mission critical and industrial cooling solutions.

How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As an Associate Engineer you will provide engineering for various cooling tower projects across multiple product lines using materials including steel and fiberglass. The incumbent will be responsible for transforming conceptual ideas into market-ready products through research, engineering, and project management. This involves developing structurally sound solutions, performing design calculations, and ensuring compliance with structural codes and practical assembly standards. You will, while under supervision, use established procedures to complete activities, and assigned tasks. The successful Associate Engineer will be collaborative and creative, with excellent problem solving, technical expertise, and strong communications skills.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Design and Development

  • Perform engineering analysis and calculations
  • Develop designs and solid models of new products and customer orders
  • Conceptualize, design, and develop product component parts and product subassemblies
  • Complete product performance selections
  • Manage projects and schedule tasks
  1. Customer Order Processing Support

  • Produce 3D models, bill of materials, ERP items, sales and fabrication drawings to support customer orders.
  • Perform analysis, lab testing, lab performance review, cost analyses and other actions supporting the development phase gate process.
  • Review, approve, and control vendor-supplied engineering documents
  • Maintenance of production drawings, vendor drawings, sales drawings, product configurator logic, bills of materials and product manuals
  • Develop solutions to problems and innovative designs
  • Assist internal sales team

3. Continuous Improvement

  • Perform cost reduction activities and related design for manufacturing improvements
  • Research and stay up to date with industry trends and technologies to drive innovation and continuous improvement
  • Participate in other projects as assigned that relate to the overall goals of the department and organization

What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience

  • Experience in structural, mechanical, or civil engineering/design in a similar or like industry.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 0-2 years of experience
  • Prior experience in the HVAC or commercial/industrial air industries a plus.
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD (AutoCAD and SolidWorks/SolidEdge a plus) and hand sketching.
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP (Infor XA, Microsoft AX, or SAP a plus).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of national building codes.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of cooling tower design and structural engineering.
  • Demonstrated competence in utilizing cooling tower design tools and structural engineering methods.
  • Detailed knowledge of multiple product lines and specifications.
  • Accountability for one's own work but requiring daily or weekly oversight and coaching.
  • Strong ability to visualize complex spatial geometry.
  • Highly creative.
  • Passionate about product optimization and improvement.
  • Persistent and patient enough to work on projects for which results are not seen for long periods of time.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelors in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Relevant co-op or internship experience a plus
  • Must pass the EIT/FE exam within 2 years of BS degree or hire date, whichever is later.
  • Must pass the PE exam within 6 years of BS degree, or 2 years of hire date, whichever is later.
  • Has met all the educational requirements and standards to be certified as an EIT (Engineer in Training) after passing the FE exam.

Travel & Working Environment

  • Onsite office environment, Monday - Friday; Hybrid work schedule available after satisfactory completion of probationary period.
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Keyboarding/typing.
  • Ability to read effectively from a computer screen and/or a paper copy.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work and perform multiples tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
