The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts (CFWM) seeks to enrich the quality of life of the people of our region by: encouraging philanthropy; developing a perpetual, flexible endowment; assessing and responding to emerging and changing needs; serving as a resource, catalyst, and coordinator for charitable activities; promoting efficiency in the management of charitable funds.

CFWM volunteers support our community by serving as reviewers, committee members, and Trustees who are invested in our community, have a commitment for advancing equity in our region, interest and/or experience in community or educational engagement, fundraising, investments, financial audits and budgeting, and/or nonprofit work. 

Position Overview

The Distribution Committee is responsible for providing advice and guidance on the grantmaking policies at the Foundation. They review and approve or decline all grantmaking recommendations including those from competitive processes, donors, and scholarships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in meetings offering both personal and professional advice and guidance for grantmaking at the Foundation.    
  • Learn about CFWM programs and serve as an ambassador for those programs across the community.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the information obtained in the course of your duties as a volunteer.
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest that may occur.

Time Commitment

  • Terms are 3 years in length, with a maximum of 9 years of service
  • Participate in approximately 6 meetings annually typically every 6 - 8 weeks, in-person and/or on Zoom
  • Distribution Committee members are strongly encouraged to participate in the various grant review process held throughout the year, approximately a 2-hour time commitment

In line with our strategic priority to advance equity in our region, CFWM seeks volunteers who reflect Western Massachusetts’ overall diversity, across gender, age, race, ethnicity, and disability, as well as both urban and rural representation from Hampden, Franklin, and Hampshire counties.

Our volunteers bring a variety of lived, educational and professional experiences to our work in the community. We seek to match the experiences of interested volunteers to our volunteer opportunities.

Distribution committee volunteers may be nonprofit professionals, community members who participate in Foundation supported programs across the region, grantmaking professionals or people withing in philanthropy. You may have lived experience, a passion for, and professional experience across a variety of key issues such as those in line with our strategic priorities arts, education, nonprofit capacity building, and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion centered on racial equity.
