Student and Family Counselor

Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree or higher in clinical or counseling psychology, social work, or in a related mental health field AND counseling experience working with children and families.

Reports To: Director of Special Programs and Director of Pupil Personnel

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Provide general consultation and educational services to children and/or parents.
  2. Counsel with children and parents both individually and in group setting.
  3. Utilize referral sources and receive referrals as appropriate.
  4. Perform both as a student assistance team member as well as working autonomously as a program counselor.
  5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  6. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, parents, school administrators and staff, court officials, and community service providers.
  7. Maintain records and prepare reports.
  8. Operate a computer terminal and data entry techniques.
  9. Prioritize and schedule work.
  10. Learn, apply, and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  11. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
  12. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  13. Work independently with little direction.
  14. Meet schedules and timelines.
  15. Make home visits as deemed necessary.
  16. Coordinate services to children through collaboration with parents, school staff, and community resources.
  17. Implements and adheres to all rules and regulations, policies, and administrative guidelines as adopted by the School Board for the district.
  18. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff.
  19. Maintains appropriate professional appearance.
  20. Adheres to the professional Codes of Ethics adopted by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
  21. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations by interacting effectively with and demonstrating respect for the views, rights and contributions of parents, teachers and other school personnel.
  22. Performs responsible duties in support of the Student Assistance Program.
  23. Works closely with other program personnel to coordinate activities and assure compliance with program and district reporting and evaluation requirements.
  24. Acquire appropriate training.
  25. Promote and facilitates the delivery of direct services.
  26. Processes education and counseling referrals and provides direct services to students and families.
  27. Maintain records on all sessions with students and families.
  28. Provide appropriate feedback to referral sources on the recommendations and disposition of referred students.
  29. Participate in the process of assessing the nature and scope of students' and families' problems.
  30. Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with high professional ethics and courtesy.
  31. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding individual students and their families.
  32. Implements and adheres to all rules and regulations, policies, administrative guidelines, and directives as adopted by the Board of Education, Administrative Staff, Superintendent and School Based Decision Making Council.
  33. Maintain acceptable personal attendance without repeated unexcused absences, tardies, absences without notification, or abuse of sick leave.
  34. Perform any other duties assigned by the Director of Special Programs, Director of Pupil Personnel, or the Superintendent of Schools.
