Summary:

The Physician Assistant for Neurosurgery utilizes the process to meet the health care needs of patients. The Physician Assistant practice is based on established standards of care and assists in surgery as needed. The Physician Assistant also rounds on inpatients as needed and is supervised by the designated physician. Additionally, the Physician Assistant promotes teamwork among co-workers and adheres to patient satisfaction principles. The Physician Assistant reports to the clinic director and to the designated physician.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant program
  • Completion of an approved Physician Assistant training program
  • Two years of nursing experience in a related field, Physician Assistant preferred
  • Previous physician office experience preferred
    License or Certification Requirements:
  • Current license to practice in the State of Illinois
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by a national certifying agency
  • Current CPR certification as staffing needs require
  • Membership in AAPA desirable
  • Current CME credits
Responsibilities:
  • Assists in surgery as needed.
  • Communicates in a positive manner with patients and co-workers.
  • Consults with Medical Director or designate as needed.
  • Diagnoses and prescribes treatments under the direction of the designated physician.
  • Does developmental screening appropriate to patient's age and gender.
  • Interpret results of laboratory testing and provide appropriate follow-up.
  • Maintains accurate patient medical records.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of health issues in field of practice.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to medical and social service providers.
  • Obtains appropriate specimens for testing.
  • Performs microscopic identification of organisms.
  • Performs screening tests appropriate to patient's age, gender and condition.
  • Provides assistance in utilization of available healthcare resources.
  • Provides health maintenance education appropriate to patient's age and gender.
  • Records pertinent clinical data.
  • Reviews medical histories and performs physical assessments.
  • Rounds on inpatients as needed.
