Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a variety of Respiratory Care functions including therapies, education, assessments, and effective communication in the administration of timely and efficacious Respiratory Care
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responds to all cardio-respiratory emergencies and/or needs for various respiratory therapies - assists in CPR
- Recommends Respiratory treatments and modalities as suggestions for the physicians' medical order as needed.
- Administers and monitors medical gas (including and especially oxygen) delivery systems
- Administers and evaluates aerosolized medications ordered by the physician on ventilator and non-ventilator patients. This will include nebulizers, MDI delivery with spacers, and DPI devices
- Manages patients in the Asthma Room, performs pre and post assessments for non-ventilator asthmatic patients - assesses breath sounds and measures peak flows.
- Initiates, monitors, adjust parameters on, and troubleshoots as necessary, departments ventilators BIPAPS, and Airvo Devices
- Obtains arterial blood gas samples for blood gas analysis. Performs blood gas analysis and related quality control functions. Interprets blood gas analysis, makes appropriate recommendations. Enters daily temperature and shift maintenance record in the ISTAT log
- Covers assigned areas of responsibility, fosters teamwork among staff members, assisting and back-filling in assignments and responsibilities as necessary. Shows flexibility, and cooperation in helping fellow staff.
- Assists as necessary with intubations as well as bronchoscopies and managing the bronchoscopy equipment
- Places patient on End-Tidal CO2 monitors
- Performs airway and tracheal care
- Troubleshoots problems and reports to the supervisors
- Performs liberation assessments and liberation of patients from Mechanical Ventilations per protocol.
- Assesses correct placement of the endotracheal tube and cuff pressure. Performs endotracheal extubations
- Educates patients and their families as indicated by prescribed therapies.
- Assists in providing orientation and training for ancillary personnel sharing responsibilities in the patients' respiratory care
- Nurtures a positive environment to help support the patient's needs and the needs of other hospital personnel
- Performs all timely documentation in patients' medical records according to departmental practice and policy.
- Performs Pulmonary Function Tests for Adult and Pediatric patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Meets all required compliance standards such as annual physical, annual mandatory educations, corporate compliance, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,
2. Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,
3. Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
Special Notes:
Individuals providing respiratory therapy services in New York on or after January 1, 1994 who believe they will meet, and submit documented evidence from the State Education Department, Division of Professional Licensing Services, of receipt of an application for licensure under the so-called grandparenting provisions of the new licensing law may continue to practice until either December 31, 1994 or receiving notice from the State Education Department of denial of licensure, whichever occurs first.
At the time of appointment, and to maintain the position of Associate Respiratory Therapist, individuals must meet and maintain the licensure requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department covering the practice of respiratory therapy.
