DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Positions in this class are found in investigative, administrative, and supervision units in the Probation Department. Incumbents are assigned tasks of a well-defined and limited nature. Their work is subject to detailed and frequent review, which lessens as they become more experienced.

This class is distinguished from the Deputy Probation Officer I classification in that Deputy Probation Officers are sworn peace officers and are required to carry out the duties of a peace officer; may be responsible for providing administrative oversight of cases assigned to alternative caseloads, such as banked caseloads and remote reporting; while such oversight entails paper monitoring, there may be incidental direct contact.

Examples of Duties:

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Serve as the primary triage point in conjunction with ACPD; i.e., notification of closure, access and connection support, feedback and troubleshooting
  • Verify client information utilizing various means to confirm eligibility, identify potential service barriers, etc.
  • Complete appropriate client referrals to community providers
  • Support clients in understanding and navigating probation terms utilizing a trauma response customer approach
  • Participate in community events, outreach activities, and agency meetings as required
  • Clerical and administrative tasks as needed to support reentry program functions
  • Assists in case supervision and makes contacts with clients as directed.
  • Assists in finding employment, housing, and other programs for clients.
  • By various methods provides verification of case information submitted by clients.
  • Assists with locating clients, victims, and/or witnesses.
  • Screens incoming calls.
  • May perform drug testing responsibilities.
  • Transports adults and juveniles to a variety of locations; i.e., medical appointments, employment opportunities, schools, etc., primarily when trips are in County and when regular Transportation Workers are not available.
  • Assists with obtaining or locating various required reports such as police reports, school reports, psychiatric reports, etc.
  • Assists in the supervision of juveniles on outings, cultural or recreational events; participates in group work activities.
  • Does fingerprinting of clients or other staff as required by legal mandates or department policy.
  • May prepare risk and needs assessments and assist in the delivery of evidence based programs and services
Education:

Completion of two (2) years of study (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) at an accredited college or university.

AND

Experience:

The equivalent of one year full-time experience working in a probation, delinquency prevention, detention, recreation with youth, rehabilitation, legal or related program.

Special Requirements:

A thorough background investigation will be conducted on all prospective Probation Aides.

Must be willing to work all assignments locations and varied days of the week.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license is required. A good driving record according to DMV negligent operator guidelines and qualifications for automotive insurance is also required.

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the Examples of Duties section of this specification.

Knowledge of:
  • General causes of crime and delinquency.
  • General understanding of the role of the probation officer in juvenile and criminal justice system.
Ability to:
  • Organize thoughts and make sound judgments.
  • Learn and receive training working with juveniles and adults who are involved in the criminal justice system.
  • Carry out instructions, communicate effectively in both written and oral forms.
