Job Summary:

The Clinical Dietitian is a qualified professional who develops and oversees individualized plans of care related to the nutritional status of residents in the Kosair for Kids Complex Care Center at the direction of the Senior Vice President / Administrator, in collaboration with physicians, the Interdisciplinary Team, residents and their guardians, and both internal and external stakeholders. The Clinical Dietitian provides expert guidance, oversight, and support, to ensure residents' nutritional needs are met and residents can maintain their highest practicable level of well-being. The Clinical Dietitian embodies the Core Values of compassion, wellness, excellence, and empowerment to ensure standards of excellence and quality that adhere to federal, state, local, and facility standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements while maintaining an environment in which children, young adults, families, and team members thrive.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position does not directly supervise other team members.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of customized and resident-centered care plans, providing initial and ongoing assessments of residents' nutritional status, needs, health conditions, preferences, risk factors, goals, and habits, collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to meet residents' optimal health and well-being.
  • Coordinate residents' nutritional care including monitoring, documenting, and deciding how and when to address weight changes, nutrition issues, therapeutic and mechanically altered diets, enteral and parenteral nutrition, and medication use related to nutrition and hydration, making essential entries in each resident's medical record.
  • Develop and evaluate regular and therapeutic diets, including the texture of foods and liquids, to meet the specialized needs of residents, providing consultation as needed.
  • Evaluate procedures and desktop instructions, making recommendations for inclusion of evidence-based practice related to resident nutrition and hydration.
  • Provide consultation and auditing of food storage, preparation, distribution, and service to ensure kitchen and food service is provided under sanitary conditions and meets or exceeds regulatory requirements, making recommendations for improvement and responding to and reporting concerns promptly.
  • Participate in the Infection Prevention and Control program, including auditing, data collection, investigation, control, and consultation, to prevent foodborne illness when necessary.
  • Review menus to ensure they meet nutritional adequacy standards and are provided with respect to resident's assessed needs.
  • Continually collaborate with departmental leadership, interdisciplinary team, Food Service Department, and other internal and external stakeholders to identify, research, and communicate best practice guidelines and regulatory standards and improve resident care quality.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement [QAPI] initiatives providing data collection and metrics analysis, evaluating the effectiveness of food and nutritional services, and submitting reports and recommendations using data-driven outcomes.
  • Participate in the development and execution of department financial objectives related to food and nutrition services collaboratively with departmental leadership to meet fiscal targets.
  • Treat and ensure residents, families, team members, and visitors are treated fairly, with respect, and confidentiality, regarding all aspects of individual diversity, and inclusion to ensure they are free from abuse, neglect, and maltreatment, reporting concerns immediately.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and foster strong relationships among internal and external stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of pediatric and/or long-term care standards of practice related to food and nutrition services is required and a willingness to impart such knowledge to maintain the highest quality of care delivery.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and manage multiple residents' nutritional needs simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret medical records, lab results, and other diagnostic information to determine appropriate nutritional interventions.
  • Must function independently, with flexibility, personal integrity, professionalism, and compassion to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and in various states of crisis.
  • Proficient with current Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree granted by an accredited college or university with completion of the academic requirements of a program in nutrition or dietetics. Master's degree preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian [RD] certification is required from an accredited institution.
  • Unencumbered and current Commonwealth of Kentucky Registered Dietitian license is required.
  • Minimum two years of experience working as a Registered Dietitian in an acute care or long-term care setting is required, pediatric experience is preferred.
  • Current CPR/Basic Life Support for the healthcare provider certification is required and provided.
Physical Requirements:
  • May be mentally and emotionally demanding.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and computer workstation.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 35 lbs. up to 65 lbs. unassisted, from the floor using proper body mechanics.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions and frequent movement throughout the day.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Must be able to physically attend and participate in continuing education and training on-site, off-site, in the community, and out of state.
