The responsibilities of the Inpatient Pharmacy Manager include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws, regulations and rules; compliance with all accreditation standards and knowledge of and adherence to all policies and procedures of the organization and department.

  • Manages the day to day operations of the central pharmacy in real time. This person must be able to perform the work of the staff, and guide, train and develop others to improve. Maintains knowledge of the technician processes and has the ability to manage those as well. May also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

  • Maintains drug accountability and control processes, establishes effective internal controls, and ensures pharmacy operations comply with state/federal law and quality standards.

  • Leads the management and development of work processes to support and/or improve efficiency, safety or otherwise support department goals.

  • Provides direct oversight of sterile and nonsterile compounding processes, assuring full compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, standards, and policies.

  • In collaboration with other members of the leadership team, coordinates and supervises the orientation and training of IV room staff (pharmacists, residents, pharmacy interns, and technicians).

  • Assists in the management of the drug budget, including creation of controls, cost savings initiatives, systems and clinical programs to lower costs while maintaining the highest level of care.

  • Assists with project management including the creation of ideas, identification of key stakeholders, developing and executing the project, presenting to large groups and up the director level stakeholders at the organization and timely completion of projects assigned.

  • Assists with budgeting, including participation in the forecasting or identification of needs, financial assessments of value, negotiations on price and value through financial mechanisms and tools and managing requests and purchases (e.g. review and approval of invoices).

  • Assists with the management of productivity, with a focus on schedule creation and management but including the development of a knowledge of metrics, awareness of performance in real time and demonstrating an ability to adjust to meet productive standards through flexing staff, adjusting schedules, and proactive flexible position control.

  • Collaborates with the Associate Director of Pharmacy Operations to oversee, supervise, coordinate, and facilitate operational collaboration and cooperation among all pharmacists, lead techs, and technicians to ensure the accurate and timely acquisition, distribution, and control of medications, as well as, for the purpose of effecting maximum operational efficiency and quality.

  • Participates departmental and organizational committees as assigned.

  • Assist as a resource to Information System Pharmacists for the purpose of maintaining and maximizing the department information systems.

  • Shares operations on call with other operational pharmacy staff.

  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for personal behavior and decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.

  • Is engaged in the department, including managing up, owning team decisions and communicating and supporting departmental and/or organizational initiatives.

  • Participates in the annual performance evaluation of pharmacy staff.

  • Reports medication errors using BMC's electronic reporting system, and participates in the investigation and action planning for errors related to compounded medications.

  • Participates in the recall process when necessary by searching for recalled lots via electronic or manual manufacturing logs.

  • Collaborates with Investigational Pharmacy Service staff for the preparation of investigational drugs when needed.

  • Performs other related tasks as needed or assigned.


EDUCATION:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy. Completion of an accredited residency program in hospital pharmacy or an advanced degree (e.g. PharmD, M.S. or MBA) is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Work requires at least 2 years pharmacy experience of in an acute care hospital setting, with demonstrated leadership skills. (Residency experience may be included in years of experience at a ratio of 1:1).

  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Requires licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Massachusetts.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Comprehensive understanding of all the procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy as well as a high level of proficiency in performing these duties and responsibilities.

  • Comprehensive understanding of USP chapters , , , and .

  • High level of analytical ability to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures to improve them by gathering data from a wide variety of sources through an evaluative research process.

  • Organizational and personnel management skills to function as a role model and to ensure the concerted approach to operations.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to relate to hospital healthcare personnel working cooperatively and collaboratively to resolve problems, as well as effectively communicating and displaying leadership within and outside of the department.

  • High level of proficiency with standard software used in healthcare office setting (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, web browser, etc.).

  • Must possess self-management skills and require little to no supervision. This person must be a self-starter, self-motivating, have a strong work ethic and must have the ability to identify issues or opportunities that require attention and change.

  • Ability to problem solve issues when resources are stretched or scarce; ability to make alternative plans as needed.

  • Must possess and exhibit process improvement skills and acumen.
