Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational and Project Work: Planning, Building, Managing Data/Voice Networks:
- Contribute to the design, implementation, support, and ongoing enhancements of more redundant and resilient data/voice campus networks.
- Continual, proactive observation of the status, health, utilization, and performance of enterprise networks through use of monitoring and capacity planning tools.
- Support of mission critical operations: core and distributed campus networks (wired and wireless), campus telephony solutions, internet connectivity, and bandwidth.
- Collaborate with team members and other teams within University Information Technologies ( UNIT ) to take a more holistic approach to equipment lifecycle, with special emphasis on the security of said infrastructure: design, purchase, asset tracking, build, configuration, monitoring, enhancement, and timely replacement of all hardware and software tied to data/voice networks.
- Engage in the Continual Service Improvement process with colleagues to assess services and processes, identifying opportunities for enhancements or replacements.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer between units inside and outside of UNIT .
- Generate quotes, purchase requests, and justification for procurement of equipment and services.
- Participate in meetings relevant to this position and team across campus.
- Create and facilitate change requests for approval on all production networks.
- Participate in planning activities for establishing future directions for networks and connectivity based on support metrics, customer experience, and their contribution to the mission of Villanova.
- Contribute to UNIT's outreach and customer relations efforts, working with staff to assure that customer needs are met.
- Work with clients and units both inside and outside UNIT to assure satisfactory delivery of services in an efficient manner.
- Provide technical support and consulting to colleagues both internal and external to UNIT to ensure systems and services are more secure, sustainable, and scalable.
- Cultivate and maintain strong partnerships with key internal and external campus colleagues. Engage proactively to build strong relationships with strategic vendors.
- Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Formal Education:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combinations of relevant certifications, education, training, and work experience will be considered
- 5+ years' experience administering network equipment:
- 5+ years' experience working with large, complex campus networks
- 5+ years' experience working with OSPF and BGP routing
- 3+ years' experience deploying and supporting wireless infrastructure
- 3+ years' experience in data center network design or support
- 1+ years' experience with Linux-based systems or command-line interfaces ( CLI )
- Possess a growth mindset with an eagerness to learn
- Curious by nature, with a willingness to ask difficult questions
- Talent for building effective relationships and working in a team
- Excellent time management and planning skills
- Ability to document the work of oneself and others
- Expert understanding of wired (Ethernet) or Wireless networking
- Expert understanding of bridging/switching/routing: OSPF / BGP , VLAN , NAT , TCP / UDP , QoS
- Foundational understanding of network security: Firewalls, ACLs, RADIUS , IDS / IPS
- Foundational knowledge of network management: SNMP , NetFlow, Packet Analysis
- Thorough understanding of fiber optic installation and support (designing, splicing, testing)
- Thorough understanding of copper installation and support (designing, splicing, testing)
Formal Education:
- Bachelor's degree
- Certifications in wired, wireless, and/or telephony networking work experience
- Experience working in a higher education setting
- Ability to apply empathy-based communications and actions to support customers
- Ability to translate needs/issues with both functional and technical audiences
- Strong analytical skills in identifying trends and making business/technical decisions
- Foundational understanding of telephony protocols, services, and integrations
- Juniper Junos OS, Cisco Command Line, Authentication Services,
- Radius / ClearPass
- Wireless site survey and evaluation tools
Tools, machinery and equipment used: Basic hand tools
Environmental conditions: (any unusual/adverse conditions such as exposure to chemicals, noise, illumination, air quality, weather exposure etc.). N/A
Physical requirements: (items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.) Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment of varying weights (up to 100 lbs.) may be required
